Default PLA Develops its First Military Training FPS Simulator at War with America

As the Obama Administration just said the PLA is no threat and is in the process of opening up military ties.

This looks like a PLA endorsed military simulation training tool....

We play so many different video games now in the West that nearly everyone would be oblivious to looking into this development seriously, most will surely brush it off as normal or trivial at best.

This FPS was not made by some software company trying to sell a game but was developed by the Chinese Military (PLA) to train Chinese soldiers PLA discipline, values and goals.

China has been touting for years it's military build up was for peace missions against terrorism and looking to become the UN police force.

So why in the PLA's first military developed FPS training simulator is their enemy American Soldiers and not Islamic Terrorists?

A revelation to the PLA's mind set and future intentions.

    As
the remake of Red Dawn and Homefront fold to the fear of offending the PLA...

The PLA finishes developing its own first military FPS game turning American soldiers into the 'Bad Guys'

    17:12, May 13, 2011

Recently, an office from China's Nanjing Military Region has finished developing a military game named Glorious Mission, which has China-owned property rights, jointly with Giant Interactive Group, Inc. (Wuxi).

Military games have been developed for years. They have formed a system and been put into use in education as well as training in some foreign armies. However, China's own development of military games is still in the primary steps.

Although some foreign military games have been used in some Chinese armies' daily training, they may not suit Chinese soldiers and even mislead them due to the different concepts of values and military thoughts.

The finished Glorious Mission with completely-independent China-owned property rights is not only full of Chinese characteristics but also brings China up to speed on military game development.

The Glorious Mission is set from a soldier's perspective and his barrack life. The game follows along as the soldier keeps promoting himself in training and finally qualifies to join a large-scale military exercise codenamed "Glorious Mission" and how he does in the military exercise.

The departments that invented the game are promoting the current game and looking forward to integrating more informationized and systematic concepts into it. And the promoted game software will be tried in some chosen armies.

Chinese FPS video game turns America into the 'bad guys'

    • May 18th, 2011 4:02 pm ET

It's a new first-person shooter military game, in the vein of America's Army, but with a twist. In Glorious Mission, Americans are the bad guys. The game was developed by China’s Giant Network Technology Co., with the assistance of the People's Liberation Army (PLA, i.e. China's military).

While America's Army has been criticized for being sort of subtly propaganda-ish, Glorious Mission doesn't doesn't go that route, and is more blatant in its nationalistic tone.

Although the technology in the game has been praised as being on-par with "Call of Duty," there is some concern that the game could lead young, impressionable gamers to believe that the United States is the enemy.

On the other hand, it's hardly a secret that some believe the U.S. and China are on a collision course for a confrontation. Most believe that will be on financial or economic terms, however, not in actual armed conflict.

In 2010, shortly following the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops, Cuban officials were up in arms about a mission in which players "killed" Fidel Castro.

A controversy also erupted around the Medal of Honor reboot video game, also in 2010. There, controversy arose when it was discovered that in the multiplayer part of the game, players could play as the Taliban. Eventually, the developer, Danger Close, modified the game so that in MP the Taliban were renamed as simply "Opposing Force."

Video Game Backed by Chinese Army Features U.S. Soldiers as Enemies

By Doug Aamoth on May 18, 2011

Here in the United States, we have America's Army, a free first-person shooter-style video game produced by the U.S. Army that, aside from being a popular and polished game, doubles as a recruitment tool.

Wired is reporting that the People's Liberation Army in China now has its own game called Glorious Mission that runs along the same vein as America's Army. Says Wired:

"But there's one key difference between the American and Chinese 'shooters.' Where the bad guys in America's Army are generic Middle Eastern or Central Asian insurgents and terrorists, the enemy in Glorious Mission is apparently the U.S. military. A TV report offers glimpses of an American-made Apache gunship crashing in flames."

The premises of U.S.-centric military shooters like the Call of Duty or Battlefield series have either trended toward battles against enemy militaries from actual wars—a historical perspective, if you will—or, as Wired puts it, "generic" insurgents and terrorist groups.

Though U.S.-based games may pull up short from claiming actual military outfits as enemies outside of a historical context, "America's Army has been criticized for having a subtle, propagandistic effect on young players," says Wired, adding, "In Glorious Mission, the politics are anything but subtle."

Gamers Target U.S. Troops in Chinese Military ‘Shooter’

China’s latest stealth fighter might be cloned from the debris of a shot-down U.S. Air Force F-117. Chinese naval warplanes are reverse-engineered Soviet designs, as is its navy’s only aircraft carrier.

For decades, China has copied many of its military systems from foreign-made originals. It’s a hallmark of a fast-growing power just finding its footing in the high-tech world.

The latest example? A first-person-shooter video game, developed by China’s Giant Network Technology Co. and backed by the People’s Liberation Army. It’s apparently modeled on the U.S. Army–made shooter America’s Army.
Like its American counterpart, introduced as a recruiting tool in 2002, Glorious Mission begins with simulated basic training before deploying the player to an imaginary battleground to duke it out in close-quarters combat. News reports show scores of Chinese troops dutifully gaming away in front of their computer screens.

“The game itself looks pretty well-made,” one blogger commented. “Graphics definitely on par with at least the [Call of Duty] series.”

But there’s one key difference between the American and Chinese “shooters.” Where the bad guys in America’s Army are generic Middle Eastern or Central Asian insurgents and terrorists, the enemy in Glorious Mission is apparently the U.S. military. A TV report offers glimpses of an American-made Apache gunship crashing in flames.

There’s another big difference. America’s Army has been criticized for having a subtle, propagandistic effect on young players. In Glorious Mission, the politics are anything but subtle. Following training and combat, the game’s third stage recreates the “fiery political atmosphere of camp life,” according to one Chinese-language news report.

Glorious Mission follows a long line of computer games meant to reproduce some element of the military experience in a particular nation or conflict. Besides America’s Army, the Pentagon has also developed so-called “first-person thinker” games for training commanders to make tough decisions in times of information overload.

Islamic group Hezbollah slapped together a crude shooter called Special Force 2, in which the player battles Israeli invaders for the future of Lebanon. NATO has a game for negotiating with pirates.

Amid Beijing’s apparent enthusiasm for Glorious Mission, some observers warn of conflating real warfare with mere simulations. “The game content and the values embodied in military thinking … are very different,” one Chinese website warns. “Long-term use is not conducive to military education and training, and may even mislead officers and men.”

It could be one of a thousand factors that mislead Chinese trainees into thinking the United States is destined to be China’s enemy. And not just on digital battlefields.

'Glorious Mission,' Chinese Video Game Targets U.S. Troops

The Huffington Post Dean Praetorius First Posted: 05/17/11 03:22 PM ET Updated: 05/18/11 02:42 PM ET

Its graphics are on par with Call of Duty, but Glorious Mission has a whole different perspective than what even the most experienced gamer might be used to.

    It targets U.S. troops.

That's right, developed by China’s Giant Network Technology Co. and backed by the People's Liberation Army (P.L.A.) this first-person shooter paints U.S. soldiers as the enemy, according to WIred. Oddly enough, it's also supposed to be modeled after the U.S. Army-made shooter game
    America's Army.

While games like Homefront and the Call of Duty series have often poised Eastern Asian or Middle Eastern people as enemies without serious repercussions, some worry that this game leads to confusion between military thinking and simulation.

    From Wired:
Amid Beijing’s apparent enthusiasm for Glorious Mission, some observers warn of conflating real warfare with mere simulations. “The game content and the values embodied in military thinking … are very different,” one Chinese Website warns. “Long-term use is not conducive to military education and training, and may even mislead officers and men.” It could be one of a thousand factors that misleads Chinese trainees into thinking America is destined to be China’s enemy. And not just on digital battlefields.
Violent games such as these seem to increasingly stir controversy. In 2010, shortly following the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops, Cuban officials were apparently outraged at a sequence in which players "killed" Fidel Castro. However, Glorious Mission's military origins are a bit off-putting.

    It's funny because its true.

I haven't seen what platform this game is gonna play on, so I'm assuming is pc-based only.

China declares war on the U.S... in a computer game

In coordination with Chinese software company Giant Interactive Group, the People’s Liberation Army has developed China’s newest first person shooter; Glorious Mission.

So what is the big deal? Well, Glorious Mission happens to be the first shooter to pit Chinese forces against U.S. Combatants, and - to no surprise - the United States are not happy with this premise.

Glorious Mission, while although only a training tool for the PLA, is causing outrage among commentators such as Ed Flanagan who thinks that this game will lead young Chinese teenagers to believe that the U.S is an enemy of the People’s Republic, not a friend.

When questioned about why the game was created , PLA officials replied that since most military simulation games are created outside of China, this gives China a chance to install Chinese values and discipline among it's large gaming community.

In any event, this American writer just wants a new game to shoot people and blow things up, regardless of who it is or who I happen to be playing.

Glorious Revolution: Chinese army develop first-person shooter game... with U.S. troops as the enemy

    By Daily Mail Reporter

The Chinese army have developed a computer game that sees their troops shooting at 'enemy' U.S. forces.

Glorious Revolution, which is used as a training tool for People's Liberation Army (PLA) soldiers, pits the Chinese army against the U.S. military in a 'Call of Duty' style first person shooter.

In a video report, Chinese soldiers can be seen storming buildings and shooting at 'enemy' troops as they exit a bunker, before destroying an Apache helicopter gunship.

Training: Chinese troops hone their skills on the Glorious Revolution computer game

A Chinese state media video report shows rows of PLA soldiers hunkered over computer screens as they play through missions of Glorious Revolution.

The use of computer games by governments and international organisations to train their people has become more widespread in recent years.

The game is similar to the U.S. army's very own shooter, America's Army, which is used as a recruitment tool.

In the same vein, the Pentagon has developed its own 'thinking' first person simulators that deliberately overload commanders with information to see how they cope.

NATO also has its own game for negotiating with maritime pirates and even Hezbollah created a game called Special Force 2.

The news comes as it emerged the U.S. military are considering sending officers and cadets to China on study exchange programs.

Admiral Patrick Walsh said Washington is seeking to improve its relationship with the Chiese military, and an officer exchange program would provide a better understanding of Chinese culture, goals and thoughts.

'There's a strong effort here to improve the relationship,' Adm. Walsh said on the sidelines of a global naval conference in Singapore.'

Troops: Chinese forces are seen here battling U.S. forces

Despite this being the PLA's first publicised foray into the world of first person shooters, reviews of the Chinese game have been broadly positive.

According to Wired magazine, one blogger who saw the game wrote: 'The game itself looks pretty well-made.

'Graphics definitely on par with at least the [Call of Duty] series.'

Despite the virtual nature of the game, one Chinese website warned the political and propaganda overtones it embodies could be damaging to trainees.

They wrote: 'The game content and the values embodied in military thinking … are very different.

'Long-term use is not conducive to military education and training, and may even mislead officers and men.'

The game comes as President Barack Obama and U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates have been been in talks to help restore military-to-military relations between the two countries.

Early last year, China angrily cut off most of those contacts after the United States announced a $6.4 billion arms sale to Taiwan, the self-governing island that China considers a renegade province.

China has also expressed a desire for warmer military ties, most recently when the chief of staff of the People's Liberation Army, General Chen Bingde, visited Washington this week.

Chinese game takes aim at U.S. troops

Chinese soldiers have started playing their own version of the first-person shooter “America’s Army,” and guess who’s in the cross hairs? America’s Army.

Dubbed “Glorious Mission,” the new game casts U.S. troops as the bad guys in a training tool for the People’s Liberation Army. In game play shown on Chinese TV, real-life Chinese troops are seen playing the game, gunning down an Apache helicopter and laying waste to American troops.

The bloody shoot-em-up looks to be on par with popular U.S. shooters such as “Call of Duty: Black Ops,” observers say.

“Glorious Mission” was developed by Giant Interactive Group, according to an account of the game’s release by People’s Daily, the official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party.

Giant Interactive, which has produced some of China’s most popular multiplayer online role-playing games — from fantasy epics to virtual pet-raising titles — is represented in the U.S. by investor relations firm Taylor Rafferty. A company spokesperson was unaware of Giant’s latest title, however, and unable to comment.

“Glorious Mission” was under development for two years, according to the Chinese army. In the game, a soldier’s personal story provides the backdrop to a large-scale actual-troop confrontation drill code-named Glorious Mission, according to the Chinese army’s newspaper, PLA Daily. The game is broken into three parts, “including basic training, individual soldier’s task and squad/team confrontation.”

Up to 32 soldiers can log on and play together.

While it’sunlikely there will be a U.S. release, American troops shouldn’t be surprised if they see copies overseas: Chinese officials say they may lease rights to the game to other countries.

    Axis membership is growing.

    WARS AND RUMORS OF WARS
Chinese train to kill American soldiers

    Computerized simulations feature Apache helicopters

Soldiers in China's People's Liberation Army are training for a possible future conflict through the assistance of a video game featuring U. S. soldiers as the enemy.

A report by China's CCTV television shows PLA officers in front of screens that have M16-wielding soldiers and Apache gunships as potential targets.

Retired military veteran Bill Watkins sees something ominous in the PLA producing a game with American targets.

"In 1967, I predicted war with China in 50 years, as we slowly withdrew from the Western Pacific. I said we'd lose that war, leading to remilitarization of Japan, leading to nuclear war between China and Japan, wrecking both and allowing for the growth in 400 years or so the rise of the next world civilization, based on Indonesia."

A study in what needs to be done in the U.S., get "Black Belt Patriotism: How to Reawaken America"
He adds that he was severely criticized because of his prediction.

"Although the possibility of that war with China has become fixed in the public mind recently (I was called every name in the book when I first made that prediction), it has grown somewhat less likely in my mind," he told WND.

U.S. soldiers are targets in Chinese video training. (CCTV photo)
The game raises the issues of tactics, strategy and military training. Military analyst Greg Vose reflects on his training and observes that the U. S. may be returning to realistic, non-politically correct training.

"On occasion we got away from silly politically correct fake countries and fought the North Koreans on our staff exercises and simulations. They were not trigger puller simulations, but then they didn't exist back then beyond expensive tank simulators," Vose said.

"If I remember correctly the old tank simulators, the SIMNET, used easily recognizable Soviet equipment. In short – I would expect them to use the U.S. as an OPFOR [opposition force]. Now that the National Training Center at Fort Irwin is going back to old school 'Force on Force' training I hope they start to incorporate Chinese tactics for the OPFOR as well," Vise also stated.

Center for Strategic and International Studies defense analyst James Lewis says the video game may actually expose a division in the Chinese government.

"It's interesting because a couple of times now in China, what I've seen and actually heard from some PLA officers is that there might be a split between the PLA which is very nationalistic and sees the U. S. as an opponent and the civilian government which is interested in cooperation and finding ways to keep both economies growing," Lewis said.

"What I saw was the tension; the Chinese don't want to admit to it. If you ask them, on the record, they'll say there's no difference between the party and the PLA," Lewis explained.
    Lewis' interview:

"Frankly I think there is and there's a growing tension in Chinese policy making between the civilians who realize the relationship with the U. S. is crucial and the PLA," Lewis continued.

Lewis says policy differences between the military and the civilian government are common in most countries. He's says the military needs "an enemy."

"They need an opponent to justify their budget increases. They need an opponent to justify some of their political influence," Lewis added.

Lewis said military planners aren't very good at determining the next enemy, but U.S. planners have not completely neglected the Chinese military threat.

Watkins agrees, saying that U. S. military planners have kept an eye on China's growing military power.

"The U.S. military does try to look one war ahead. They do seem to be doing more than general planning for a war with China. I get the feeling there may not be that much focus on infantry warfare," Watkins observed.

In actual game play, the game is like the American-made "Call of Duty" series and raises questions about how the U. S. should respond to this potential threat.

Intelligence analyst Dwight Rider says this may not be a "nefarious" Chinese plot.

"It's probably nothing more than trying to make the game more realistic. At worst, it might reflect some subconscious concern on the part of the designer expressing his concerns. As a threat, to the Chinese, the U.S. serviceman is probably the ultimate 'boogey man,'" Rider said.

"The action against Bin Laden probably only serves to reinforce their fears. The game is probably something that no one thought would ever become an issue," Rider said.

Rider said even though the creation of the game may not be as sinister as some analysts have stated, using U.S. personnel falls within the boundaries of traditional military training.

"Throughout history, military leaders have sought to 'dehumanize' their enemy so that soldiers can look upon their adversary as something less than human, and something worthy of contempt," Rider observed.

"You hear often that the U.S. fight against the Japanese in WWII was a race war, but it was no less so for the Japanese. The same held true for the Germans against the Soviets, and vice-versa," he said.

Rider states that he doesn't think the Chinese People's Liberation Army needed to make a game to demonize their potential enemy.

"Though it could be some effort on their part to dehumanize a potential adversary, I do not think that it would require a game, or the investment of large amounts of money to accomplish the same thing through several public statements on the part of commanders to influence their soldiers," Rider said.

"Consider that while the commander might seek to dehumanize the enemy to make himself more comfortable in killing them, the individual soldier is seeking the same thing. I cannot recall an army at any time in history that had any difficulty in creating contempt for his enemy," Rider added.
Rider says that U.S. officials have a recourse to counter the impact of the Chinese video game.

"If you really wanted to take some action to show the Chinese that you disapprove, the best way would be to get copies of the game and use it in our training. There would be nothing better to show them dishonor is if our soldiers can use the game, and win against it," Rider suggested.

Military specialist Greg Vose says there is one area where China poses an even greater threat to the United States.

"I bet the Chinese can tap on the keyboard a bit and simulate driving north into Siberia fighting Russians, too. Now what is scary is not them fighting a digitized 1st CAV but their government not buying our debt. That is scary and a lot more realistic of a threat," Vose stated.

WND reported just weeks ago about a long-delayed film about Chinese invaders taking over the U.S. to help "fix" America's broken economy that had undergone a digital makeover, removing the allusions to China in fear, some report, of offending the Asian nation's $1.5-billion box office.

As WND reported, the movie was expected to be a hard-core remake of the original communism-bashing "Red Dawn" of two decades back – where Lea Thompson, Charlie Sheen, Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze staged a shoot-'em-up against invading Russians in the Colorado mountains – only this time, with Chinese invaders.

But now, several Hollywood sources report, the filmmakers at MGM have hired digital artists to change all the film's Chinese flags and symbols to North Korean.

"Potential distributors are nervous about becoming associated with the finished film," reports the Los Angeles Times, "concerned that doing so would harm their ability to do business with the rising Asian superpower, one of the fastest-growing and potentially most lucrative markets for American movies, not to mention other U.S. products."

China first aircraft carrier with J-15 preview in the China first FPS video game Glorious Mission released by PLA.

STRATFOR's Vice President of Strategic Intelligence Rodger Baker discusses the military and political implications of the imminent launching of China's first aircraft carrier.

Ukraine, which took ownership, auctioned the vessel in the late 1990s, with the Chinese offering the highest bid of $20 million. It was believed that Varyag would be examined by military engineers to copy technology and later sold to a private company to be used as an entertainment facility. This was what happened to two other Soviet aircraft carriers Kiev and Minsk, which China bought too.
