Russia will complete the first prototype of the new Armata main battle tank by 2013 and begin production and deliveries to the Russian Armed Forces in 2015, Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov and the CEO of tank manufacturer Uralvagonzavod Oleg Sienko told Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, the Lenta.ru news portal reported.

Uralvagonzavod and the military are testing the main components of the new tank. No other details were reported. Meanwhile, the Defense Ministry has signed a contract worth six billion rubles with Uralvagonzavod to upgrade 170 T-72 main battle tanks, to be carried out at a specially prepared facility in Omsk, Lenta.ru said.

“The Russian armed forces will have a new main tank with fundamentally new characteristics, fully automated loading and separate crew compartment by 2015,” Lieutenant-General Yuri Kovalenko, former First Deputy Head of the Russian Defense Ministry’s Automotive Armor Directorate said last April.

Kovalenko said work from other projects, including Object 195 and Black Eagle, will be incorporated in Armata's design.

Russia’s future main battle tank (MBT) will be equipped with a remotely controlled gun, the Izvestia newspaper said on Monday citing a defense industry source.

The gun will be digitally controlled by a crewmember located in a separate compartment, which would be made from composite materials and protected by multi-layered armor. The crew compartment will be also isolated from the motor compartment to increase survivability on the battlefield.

The secret project, dubbed Armata, has been approved by the Russian Defense Ministry. It is being implemented by the tank manufacturer Uralvagonzavod in Russia’s Urals region.

Work from other projects, including Object 195 and Black Eagle, will be incorporated in Armata's design.

The prototype of Armata MBT is expected to be ready by 2013. The first deliveries to the Russian Armed Forces are scheduled for 2015.

Russian experts believe that the appearance of the remotely controlled gun would eventually lead to the development of a fully robotic tank which could be deployed as part of a spearhead in the offensive.

Head of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Defence autooklopnotenkovske Russia, Major-General Alexander Shevchenko, said the other day that the project "Armata" already implemented known military factory "Uralvagonzavod". Shevchenko has vowed to supertenk over three years but to be "in metal".

The same list is an expert on tanks, chief editor of "Arsenal" Viktor Murahovski said that the whole Russian army was enough to have only 2,000 of these tanks.

He predicts that the T-90 tanks, T-80 and T-72, the RF Ministry of Defense is now `active` modernize - as soon as a new supertenk - used only for training reservists.

"In future battles will go forward tanks-robots that will operate where it is most dangerous. Only for them to go with tanks crews, "predicts Sivkov.

He said that the Soviet Union in the last years of its existence largely worked on the production of tanks `autonomous' and ready to be on the basis of T-80` make fully automatic with a tank system identification purposes. However, the collapse of the Soviet Union prevented the bringing this project to the end.

Russian Armata MBT trials under way

Russia began trials of the first prototype/pre-production models of the new Armata (Armada) main battle tank (MBT) in late 2013, potentially leading to a limited service entry with the Russian Army in 2016.

    T-95

Prime contractor for the Armata is the UralVagonZavod Research and Production Corporation - which comprises more than 20 of the major Russian facilities engaged in the design, development, and production of tracked combat vehicles.

The Armata MBT will be armed with an externally mounted 125 mm smoothbore gun with 32 rounds of ammunition, latest information indicates. In addition to conventional ammunition, the 125 mm smoothbore gun will be able to fire a laser-guided projectile with a tandem high-explosive anti-tank warhead out to a range of at least 5,000 m. Secondary armament will consist of a 30 mm cannon and a 12.7 mm machine gun (MG).

The commander, gunner, and driver are all seated at the front of the well-protected hull, with the 125 mm gun and ammunition handling system in the middle and the high-performance diesel power pack at the rear of the vehicle.

The Armata is also being referred to as the Universal Combat Platform (BMP-T-15), with the hull to form the basis for a complete family of tracked combat vehicles.

A heavy infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) variant, called Obyekt 148, is planned to be fitted with the KBP Instrument Design Bureau Epoch Almaty remote control turret (RCT) armed with a 30 mm 2A42 cannon, 7.62 mm co-axial MG, and a bank of two Kornet-EM laser-guided missiles on either side of the RCT. This RCT will also be fitted to the new Kurganets IFV, the replacement for BMP-3 IFV, and the Bumerang 8x8 IFV, which will replace the BTR-80/BTR-80A armoured personnel carrier (APC).

Meanwhile, the BMO-2 NBC Troops RPO Flamethrower variant will have a crew of two, carry six dismounts, and be fitted with special mounts to carry the RPO (Shmel) series of infantry rocket flamethrowers. The BMO-2 will also be equipped with a remote weapon station, armed with a 30 mm cannon and co-axial MG, and will replace the older BMO-T Heavy Combat Vehicle of Flamethrower Operators, based on a T-72 hull.

The planned armoured vehicle launched-bridge variant has been designated MT-A. It will be fitted with a three-part bridge launched over the front of the hull. Additionally for engineer roles, the MYM-A variant is being developed; fitted with a front-mounted dozer blade and an entrenching system at the rear.

There is also a USM-1 Universal Mine Laying System, which will have nine modules in the rear to lay anti-tank mines.

Additionally, the currently deployed TOS-1 220 mm (30-round) and TOS-1A 122 mm (24-round) rocket systems are planned to be replaced by a similar system, based on the Armata hull, called BM-2.

Meanwhile, although Russia did develop the 152 mm/2S35 (twin) Koalitsiya (Coalition) self-propelled (SP) artillery system on a modified MBT hull, it never entered service.

Instead, Russia is now developing a new SP artillery system based on the Armata hull, planned to become the long-term replacement for the currently deployed 152 mm 2S19 SP artillery system, which is also referred to as the MSTA-S.

The new Armata-based SP system, will be armed with new ordnance developed by Artillery Plant No 9, part of UralVagonZavod, which also manufactures artillery barrels and the main armament of the T-72 and T-90 MBTs. It is assumed that the new SP artillery system will stick to the Russian 152 mm calibre rather than move toward the more common 155 mm NATO calibre. For the export market a 155 mm/52-calibre version of the 2S19 was developed, called the 2S19M1, but is not known to have entered production.

Other Armata versions include a baseline APC and an armoured repair and recovery vehicle, called Obyekt 152. Mention has also been made of at least two heavy mine-clearing vehicles: Obyekt 145, based on a T-90 hull; and Obyekt 195, based on the now-cancelled T-95 hull.

Within UralVagonZavod, design, development, and production of the Armata MBT is concentrated in Nizhny Tagil, where production of the T-90 MBT is still under way for the export market. Meanwhile, Omsk, who developed and manufactured the T-80 MBT, is concentrating on designing and developing the more specialised versions.

Today Nizhny Tagil is the only MBT production facility operational in Russia and in addition to deliveries for the Russian Army has exported the T-90S to Algeria, India (including licensed production), and Turkmenistan. Libya also placed a major contract for the T-90S and to upgrade some of its T-72 fleet, although the status of this contract is currently unclear, although some other equipment, including Khrizantema-S tank destroyers, has been delivered.

To keep the T-90 MBT production line running, UralVagonZavod has developed the export T-90MS with a number of enhancements as well as upgraded versions of the T-72. These include one fitted with the latest Arena-E hard kill defence aids system; one optimised for urban operations; and the BMPT-72 Tank Support Combat Vehicle.

The prototype of Russia’s next generation Armata main battle tank is ready for testing, which will begin by November, the head of the Russian Tank Forces said Saturday.

“The prototypes will be unveiled soon at an exhibit in Nizhny Tagil, and their tests will kick off within a month or two, I believe,” Lt. Gen. Alexander Shevchenko said on Echo Moskvy radio.

The biannual Russian Arms Expo will run in the Urals city in September 25-28 this year. Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said in July that the country’s leadership will get a sneak preview of the new tank during the arms fair.

An unmanned version of the Armata main battle tank is also on the cards, Shevchenko said.

Armata is a universal combat platform that is to be utilized for production of various armored vehicles. Shevchenko said on Friday that prototypes are already created for an Armada-based main battle tank, heavy infantry fighting vehicle and armored recovery vehicle.

The combat platform, named after a 14-century Russian cannon, is being designed since 2009 by the state-run corporation Uralvagonzavod, headquartered in Nizhny Tagil.

Armata-based vehicles will be a match for their existing NATO counterparts and even excel them in certain areas, Shevchenko said Friday, without elaborating.

Not much is known about the upcoming Armata battle tank, tentatively scheduled to enter military service in the Russian army in 2015. Media reports and military officials said earlier said that its turret would be unmanned, with three-man crew residing in the better protected chassis area, and that the main gun may utilize either shells or missiles.

Shevchenko also said Saturday that all standing alert units of the Russian army will switch to two types of main battle tanks – the T-72 and the T-90 – by early 2015. The move will complete the tank unification program in the Russian military, which utilized 40 models of 10 different battle tanks in 2008, he said.

Default Re: New Russian Tank 'Armata' to appear in 2013

    Russia Bets On Armata

    February 19, 2015

Russia has been trying to develop a radical new tank design since the 1960s. This effort already resulted in the T-64, T-72 and T-80. The only design that showed promise was the T-72, but it was not radically new, just a refinement of designs that appeared early in World War II and quickly replaced all competing designs and became the basis for all modern tanks (T-72, M-1, Leopard and so on). When it was clear (by the 1980s) that the T-72 was the best they had, several new versions appeared, not all of them Russian. But it was obvious (especially after several wars) that the T-72 was inferior to Western designs

Russia then sought to create another breakthrough design and after several false starts they believe they finally have a winner in their new “universal combat platform” called the Armata system. The first prototypes of this vehicle began testing in 2013 and the Armata platform is currently being used for the construction of the new T-14 tank prototypes. This vehicle uses the engine and tracks as well as the heavily armored crew capsule of the Armata system. Added to this is an automated 125mm gun (and 32 shells and missiles) in a turret. There is also a RWS (remote weapons station) for a 30mm autocannon and another for a 12.7mm machine-gun. In addition to the weapons the crew of three would operate several sensor systems (thermal, vidcams and AESA radar) and an automatic defense system for protection against missiles and weapons like RPGs (shaped charge rockets used by the infantry). All this would be in a 55 ton vehicle that would require the services of additional maintenance personnel nearby (behind the fighting) who would help fix problems and assist the crew in maintaining all this complex equipment. Prototypes of the T-14 are supposed to be available for field testing in 2015 or shortly thereafter.

There is already another Armata vehicle. In 2014 Russia began testing the newly built prototypes of its new Kurganets 25 IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle). This is based on the Armata chassis and will eventually replace all the existing BMP and BMD IFVs. Kurganets 25 is very similar to the American M-2 Bradley IFV as it has a turret equipped with a 25mm autocannon and two ATGM (Anti-Tank Guided Missiles) mounted on either side. The turret also has computerized fire control, thermal sensors and a 7.62mm machine-gun. The 25 ton Kurganets 25 will have a front mounted engine, a crew of three and carry six or seven infantry.

As impressive as the Kurganets 25 seems to be, the Russians may have missed the fact that after 2007 the U.S. Army stopped using the M-2 in combat. By then it was clear to the U.S. that the enemy was intent on using mines and roadside bombs in a big way and the M-1 tank, Stryker, and MRAP vehicles were much better able to handle these blast weapons than the M-2.

The Kurganets 25 is only one of several armored vehicles that use the same basic chassis and systems as the T-14, support vehicles and self-propelled artillery. It is rumored that prototypes of some Armata vehicles will be shown in military parades during late 2015.

The new 2A82-1M gun boasts 15 to 20 percent improved accuracy compared with the T-90's 2A46M canon. It has also outstripped the German Leopard 2 A6's 120mm gun in muzzle velocity. Reportedly, the T-14 might also be armed with a specially designed 152mm cannon, the most powerful gun ever carried by a main battle tank.

Remarkably, the armored platform's turret carries a 30mm machine cannon capable of neutralizing low-flying aerial targets, such as drones and helicopters, while its 12.7mm heavy machine gun could be used for both attacking enemy infantry and intercepting shells and anti-tank missiles approaching at speeds up to 3,000 meters per second.

The designers also developed a multi-layer armored capsule for the Armata's crew. It should also be noted that the multipurpose vehicle is fully computerized.

The Russian army will reportedly receive around 2,300 T-14 battle tanks by 2020, equipping up to 70 percent of its tank fleet with innovative battle vehicles.
