Dem Planning Bill to Outlaw Threatening Lawmakers

By Jon E. Dougherty at 10:01 am Eastern

(Newsroom America) -- In the wake of the shooting of Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, a Pennsylvania Democrat is considering introducing a bill in Congress that would make it a federal crime to use symbols or language that could be perceived as threatening to federal officials or members of Congress.

Rep. Robert Brady told CNN he wants federal officials and lawmakers to have the same protections against threats that the president has. He made his pitch on Sunday, a day after Giffords was shot at a political rally outside a supermarket in Tucson.

"The president is a federal official. You can't do it to him; you should not be able to do it to a congressman, senator or federal judge," Brady said in a telephone interview with the news service.

Liberal lawmakers have begun to criticize former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin for her use of a bullseye graphic on a map posted on one of her websites of 20 congressional districts that voted for Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., in the 2008 presidential election, but had Democratic members that voted in favor of healthcare reform. Palin was criticized because the graphic resembled the crosshairs of a gun scope.

Palin suppoters, however, point to a nearly identical political map used by a Democratic Leadership Committee publication in 2004 that featured nine bullseyes over regions where Republican candidates were considered vulnerable during that election cycle. The map was captioned, "Targeting Strategy," and was followed by a smaller one that read, "Behind Enemy Lines."

Giffords, who was shot in the head, remains in critical condition at a local hospital. Six people were killed in the attack, and 13 others wounded.
The suspect, 22-year-old Jared Loughner, has been charged with one account of attempting to assassinate a member of Congress, two counts of killing an employee of the federal government and two counts of attempting to kill a federal employee. Other charges are expected, reports said Monday.

Just for the record, it is already illegal in nearly every state, if not every state to make "threats" against others - regardless of whether they are "officials" or "regular" peons. I mean citizens.

MORE LAWS don't HELP. MORE LAWS make it more difficult to even think.

Look folks, this is wrong, it's bullshit and this guy needs to stop before he introduces a law that just makes it more complex to even write.

This is against the First Amendment in any stretch.

if it is ALREADY ILLEGAL in all states to make death threats then why are you doing this NOW.

I remember Bush having all sorts of "crosshairs" on him in public dissertations by Leftists.

Only because Palin had some article printed that had a map with cross hairs on it?

Shooting prompts legislation to protect lawmakers, officials
By: CNN Senior Political Editor Mark Preston
Washington (CNN) - Rep. Robert Brady, D-Pennsylvania, said he will introduce legislation making it a federal crime for a person to use language or symbols that could be perceived as threatening or inciting violence against a Member of Congress or federal official.

Brady's decision to offer the legislation comes less than 24 hours after a gunman attempted to assassinate Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Arizona, in a shooting that claimed the lives of a federal judge, and a nine year-old girl, among others.

"The president is a federal official," Brady said in a telephone interview with CNN. "You can't do it to him; you should not be able to do it to a congressman, senator or federal judge.

"This is not a wake up call, this is major alarms going off," he said.
Brady is particularly incensed over a web posting by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin during the 2010 election in which she targeted 20 House Democrats, including Giffords for political defeat. The posting showed a map of the United States with the 20 Democratic congressional districts identified by gun sights.

"You can't put bulls eyes or crosshairs on a United States congressman or a federal official," Brady said. "I understand this web site that had it on there is no longer in existence. Someone is feeling a little guilty."

But a Palin aide Saturday denied the web posting from the 2010 congressional campaign was designed to incite violence. Rebecca Mansour told conservative host Tammy Bruce that it was a political tool and noted it should have been removed after the November election.
Brady said he is hearing that the spouses of some of his congressional colleagues, specifically the newly elected members, are terrified and questioning whether they should remain in Congress. Upon hearing the news of the shooting Saturday, some spouses attending a freshman retreat in West Virginia, were "taking their children out of the daycare," Brady said he was told.

"The spouses are in an uproar," he said. "They are panicking."

Brady said it is now time to put an end to the hyper-charged language.

"The rhetoric is just ramped up so negatively, so high, that we have got to shut this down," Brady said, noting that "I've had my share of death threats" over his many years in politics.

Brady said he has not spoken to his House colleagues about the bill or a senator who might offer similar legislation. But Brady noted that he hoped to have it ready as soon as possible.

Brady stressed he is not "pointing at any particular party" noting that there is Democratic rhetoric and actions at times that he thinks is out of bounds. "You can disagree without being disagreeable," he said.

As for support for the bill, Brady said, "Why would you be against it?"

Well thanks now to a cover up at the dailykos and people conveniently forgetting anything the left has said in the last year, especially by the President, this is what you get. It's all spiraling down the drain now and actually speeding up.

Companion bills banning the gun magazine used in the Tucson shooting are being introduced, reports Shira Toeplitz: "One of the fiercest gun control advocates in Congress, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.), pounced on the shooting massacre in Tucson, Ariz., Sunday, promising to introduce legislation as soon as Monday targeting the high-capacity ammunition clip the gunman used. McCarthy ran for Congress after her husband was gunned down and her son seriously injured in a shooting in 1993 on a Long Island commuter train...Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) said he’s preparing to introduce a similar bill in the Senate. 'The only reason to have 33 bullets loaded in a handgun is to kill a lot of people very quickly,' Lautenberg said in a statement. 'These high-capacity clips simply should not be on the market.'"

    It's not a clip, it's a magazine.

Witch Hunt FBI: Conservative Blogger Probed By Fed after Tucson Shooting

    Ron Davis

    CHRISTIAN COUNTY, Mo.

A local blogger who was critical of Rep. Billy Long during last year's congressional campaign has been interviewed by the FBI about his encounters with the congressman.

Clay Bowler, who lives in Christian County, says he was shocked to find an agent from the Federal Bureau of Investigation at his doorstep. Accompanying the agent was Greene County Sheriff Jim Arnott.
The agent asked Bowler if he was a threat to Long, a notion Bowler finds laughable.

"I'm not a threat to Billy Long," Bowler said Thursday. "I find the whole thought very funny, because I'm such an advocate for constitutional rights that I would never do anything that would put in jeopardy those constitutional rights like the Second Amendment."

Bowler published a blog in 2010 -- Long Is Wrong -- and said he campaigned against Long because he didn't think the Springfield businessman would be a good representative for southwest Missouri. Bowler took down the site after the November election, when Long defeated Democrat Scott Eckersley to replace outgoing Rep. Roy Blunt.

Bowler acknowledges confronting Long as some campaign events, but says he did not threaten Long.

Bowler was puzzled why Arnott accompanied the FBI agent. Arnott is sheriff of Greene County. Bowler lives several miles into Christian County.
"Our first information was that he lived in Republic," in Greene County, Arnott said.

Christian County Sheriff Joey Kyle was apparently unaware the FBI was in his county, interviewing a person who'd been flagged as a potential problem to a sitting U.S. congressman.

Bowler isn't the only local person under federal investigation. Arnott confirmed to KSPR News that Bowler isn't the only local person who's been scrutinized in the wake oflast weekend's shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Gifford (D-AZ) during a meet-and-greet with constituents in Tucson, Ariz.

Arnott said U.S. Capitol police canvassed members of Congress to come up with a list of people across the country who might be considered potential threats to members of Congress. It's up to local law enforcement to protect members of Congress when they return to their home districts.

Bowler, an avowed conservative, says the FBI visit was cordial. He videotaped the encounter and said the agent was polite throughout the brief encounter.

But Bowler says the FBI visit left him shaken.

"I don't sit 24 hours a day, seven days a week, thinking about Billy Long," Bowler said. "I stopped going to campaign events in September where Billy attended."

Bowler said law enforcement told him he's not considered a threat to Long.
Long office did not return a request for comment.

Arnott spoke about the interview on radio station KSGF Friday.
