Judicial Watch Unveils Pelosi's Military Transport Requests

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi may have crossed a no-fly zone with taxpayers. Judicial Watch, a conservative government watchdog group, has obtained documents from the Department of Defense that itemize her many requests to use Air Force aircraft for travel as well as the use of additional planes as military escorts. More so, Pelosi often canceled her military travel arrangements just minutes before her flight was scheduled to depart. A DOD official referred to this routine practice as "hidden late fees," due to the large staff needed to prep the plane, prepare meals, and more, that still was paid despite the Speaker's lack of attendance.

"Taken together, these documents show that Speaker Pelosi treats the Air Force like her personal airline," said President Tom Fitton of Judicial Watch, an organization that aims to promote government transparency. "Not only does Speaker Pelosi issue unreasonable requests for military travel, but her office seems unconcerned about wasting taxpayer money with last-minute cancellations and other demands."

Among documents collected by Judicial Watch were emails between the Air Force and Kay King, Director of the House Office of Interparliamentary Affairs. In one conversation, King expresses Pelosi's extreme disappointment in the military for failing to provide her with the aircraft she had asked to use. ""It is my understanding there are no G5s available for the House during the Memorial Day recess. This is totally unacceptable," wrote King. "We will have ... a very upset [s]peaker." A G5 is a small aircraft that, despite being a military vessel, is basically a luxury private jet.

Requests included military planes for a funeral in Ohio, a flight to Michigan, as well as for a meeting in Iraq.

This is not the first time that the Speaker of the House was criticized for the use of military planes. In 2007 she requested an Air Force aircraft to transport her and her staff roundtrip from Washington, D.C. to San Francisco. Although previous speaker Dennis Hastert was allowed the use of military planes, this was positioned as a security measure following the 9/11 attacks.

WASHINGTON, DC - Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, announced today that it has obtained documents from the Department of Defense (DOD) detailing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's multiple requests for military air travel. The documents, obtained by Judicial Watch through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), include internal DOD email correspondence detailing attempts by DOD staff to accommodate Pelosi's numerous requests for military escorts and military aircraft as well as the speaker's last minute cancellations and changes. The following are a few highlights from the documents, which can be read in their entirety at www.judicialwatch.org:


-- In response to a series of requests for military aircraft, one Defense
Department official wrote, "Any chance of politely querying [Pelosi's team]
if they really intend to do all of these or are they just picking every
weekend?... [T]here's no need to block every weekend 'just in case'... "
The email also notes that Pelosi's office had, "a history of canceling many
of their past requests."

-- One DOD official complained about the "hidden costs" associated with
the speaker's last minute changes and cancellations. "We have... folks
prepping the jets and crews driving in (not a short drive for some),
cooking meals and preflighting the jets etc."

-- The documents include a discussion of House Ethics rules and Defense
Department policies as they apply to the speaker's requests for staff,
spouses and extended family to accompany her on military aircraft. In May
2008, for example, Pelosi requested that her husband join her on a
Congressional Delegation (CODEL) into Iraq. The DOD explained to Pelosi
that the agency has a written policy prohibiting spouses from joining
CODEL's into combat zones.

-- Documents obtained from the U.S. Army include correspondence from
Speaker Pelosi's office requesting an Army escort and three military planes
to transport Pelosi and other members of Congress to Cleveland, Ohio, for
the funeral services of the late Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones. Pelosi noted
in her letter of August 22, 2008, that such a request, labeled "Operation
Tribute," was an "exception to standard policy."

-- The documents also detail correspondence from intermediaries for
Speaker Pelosi issuing demands for certain aircraft and expressing outrage
when requested military planes were not available. "It is my understanding
there are NO G5s available for the House during the Memorial Day recess.
This is totally unacceptable... The Speaker will want to know where the
planes are... " wrote Kay King, Director of the House Office of
Interparliamentary Affairs. In a separate email, when told a certain type
of aircraft would not be available, King writes, "This is not good news,
and we will have some very disappointed folks, as well as a very upset
[s]peaker."

-- During another email exchange DOD staff advised Kay King that one
Pelosi military aircraft request could not be met because of "crew rest
requirements" and offered to help secure commercial travel. Kay King
responded: "We appreciate the efforts to help the codel [sic] fly
commercially but you know the problem that creates with spouses. If we can
find another way to assist with military assets, we would like to do that."


Speaker Pelosi came under fire in 2007 for requesting a 42-seat Air Force carrier to ferry the Speaker and her staff back and forth between San Francisco, CA and Washington, DC. Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert was allowed access to a 12-seat commuter jet for security reasons after the events of 9/11.

"Taken together, these documents show that Speaker Pelosi treats the Air Force like her personal airline," said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. "Not only does Speaker Pelosi issue unreasonable requests for military travel, but her office seems unconcerned about wasting taxpayer money with last minute cancellations and other demands."

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has repeatedly requested military aircraft to shuttle her and her colleagues and family around the country, according to a new report from a conservative watchdog group.



Representatives for Judicial Watch, which obtained e-mails and other documents from a Freedom of Information request, said the correspondence shows Pelosi has abused the system in place to accommodate congressional leaders and treated the Air Force as her "personal airline."



Pelosi's office disputed the claim, pointing to White House policy enacted after the Sept. 11 attacks allowing for the House speaker to travel to his or her congressional district via military aircraft whenever possible for security reasons. Her office said she typically uses the same kind of aircraft used by her predecessor, Dennis Hastert.



But Judicial Watch said that Pelosi was notorious for making special demands for high-end aircraft, lodging last-minute cancellations and racking up additional expenses for the military.



The e-mails showed repeated attempts by Pelosi aides to request aircraft, sometimes aggressively, and by Department of Defense officials to accommodate them.



"I think that's above and beyond what other members of Congress are doing and what is expected of our elected officials," said Jenny Small, a researcher with the group.



In one e-mail, aide Kay King complained to the military that they had not made available any aircraft the House speaker wanted for Memorial Day recess.



"It is my understanding there are NO G5s available for the House during the Memorial Day recess. This is totally unacceptable ... The Speaker will want to know where the planes are," King wrote.



In another, when told a certain type of aircraft would not be available, King wrote: "This is not good news, and we will have some very disappointed folks, as well as a very upset Speaker."



Pelosi spokesman Nadeam Elshami said the report seemed to be based on only "a few e-mails," and defended the requests for military aircraft for her colleagues as a "function of the speaker's office." Elshami said at least one of the requests in the above e-mails referenced requests made for other members.



Pelosi's office noted that the Department of Defense ultimately makes all decisions on use of military aircraft for travel, and that Pelosi is "extraordinarily appreciative" of the department's effort to accommodate Congress.

Hollywood Actor, James Woods, Says Pelosi 'May Actually Be Mentally Ill'

Actor James Woods is no shrinking violet when it comes to politics.

Although he has only 144,000 followers on Twitter (compared to 53 million for Justin Bieber), Woods regales his tweepsters with wonderful links to heady topics -- and a few choice opinions.

Like Saturday, when he posted this tweet: "Pelosi may actually be mentally ill. Her behavior is becoming unhinged. This is no laughing matter." He linked to this Fox News story.

A heated debate late Friday over security at the southern U.S. border led to a rancorous confrontation on the House floor between House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Rep. Tom Marino, R-Pa.

The dustup began when Marino accused Democrats of neglecting the immigration issue when they controlled the White House and Congress in 2009 and 2010, when Pelosi was House speaker, saying that the party is now exploiting the issue for political gains.

'Under the leadership of the former speaker … in 2009 and 2010, they had the House, the Senate and the White House, and they knew this problem existed,' Marino said. 'They didn’t have the strength to go after it back then. But now are trying to make a political issue out of it now.'

Soon after he made the remarks, Pelosi, in full view of House cameras, walked across the chamber to the GOP side of the aisle -- a rarity in the House -- to challenge Marino.

It was not clear what Pelosi said, but Marino responded immediately.

'It's true, madam leader, I did the research on it,' Marino said. 'You might want to try it. You might want to try it, madam leader. Do the research on it. Do the research. I did it. That's one thing that you don't do.'

'Dumb As A Rock' Nancy Pelosi Calls Africa A 'Country,' Deletes Tweet

On Wednesday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, the California Democrat recently called "dumb as a rock" by retired Army Lt. Col. Ralph Peters, issued a tweet referring to Africa as a country, Twitchy said. Pelosi, perhaps recognizing her mistake, deleted the message, but not before it was captured by a number of people.

"Honored to join my colleagues & @OfficialCBC at #USAfrica Leaders Summit to discuss the valuable relationship between our two countries," she wrote. There's only one problem, as many on Twitter pointed out. Africa is a continent, not a single country.

"Okay, unlike Biden's minor slip-up, this is a legit gaffe," said T. Becket Adams. "Dear @NancyPelosi, Africa is not a country … you dingus."

"I think she and Biden copied the talking points into their Twitter feeds," one person added. While speaking at the U.S.-Africa Business Forum this week, Vice President Joe Biden made the same mistake, referring to Africa as a country twice instead of a continent.

“There is no reason the nation of Africa cannot, and should not, join the ranks of the worlds most prosperous nations,” Biden said. Conservatives across the country pounced on his gaffe, recalling how liberals ridicule Sarah Palin for allegedly being "dumb."

"In 24 hrs both Joe Biden & Nancy Pelosi referred to Africa as a 'nation,'" one person said on Twitter. "Is this a great country or what? You can get to the top ignorant!"

Recently, conservative author and comedian Evan Sayet explained why liberals like Pelosi and Biden rise to the top of their professions despite being "stupid." According to Sayet, liberals succeed because they choose professions that don't require them to actually do anything.

"They don't build, they don't make, they don't construct, they don't manufacture, they don't prepare, they don't sow, they don't mend," he said. "Every single profession that we associate with liberalism is all talk, but no action, and the thing is when you don't 'do anything,' you don't know what you're talking about."
