Russia warns Denmark its warships could become nuclear targets

Russia tells Denmark not to join Nato missile shield or face becoming a target for Russian missiles

Russia has gone on the offensive in the Baltic, warning Denmark that if it joins Nato’s missile defence shield, its navy will be a legitimate target for a Russian nuclear attack.

“I don’t think that Danes fully understand the consequence if Denmark joins the American-led missile defence shield. If they do, then Danish warships will be targets for Russian nuclear missiles,” said Mikhail Vanin, the Russian ambassador to Denmark, to the Jyllands-Posten newspaper.

    • How do we protect the Baltic states?

“Denmark would be part of the threat against Russia. It would be less peaceful and relations with Russia will suffer. It is, of course, your own decision - I just want to remind you that your finances and security will suffer. At the same time Russia has missiles that certainly can penetrate the future global missile defence system,” Mr Vanin said.

Denmark’s Foreign minister, Martin Lidegaard, reacted strongly to the comments, calling the ambassador’s statement “unacceptable”.

“If that is what he has said, then it is unacceptable. Russia knows full well that Nato’s missile defence is defensive and not targeted at (Russia).

Denmark’s Foreign minister, Martin Lidegaard, called the statement 'unacceptable'

“We disagree with Russia on many important issues, but we also cooperate, for example, in the Arctic and it is important that the tone between us does not escalate,” said Mr Lidegaard.

    • Putin will target the Baltic next, Defence Secretary warns

The ambassador’s statements came shortly after Denmark’s military published details of encroachments or near-encroachments of Danish airspace. The military said that it had scrambled its F-16 squadrons 58 times in 2014 to head off Russian aircraft, twice the number counted in 2012.

Russian military aircraft have the habit of switching off their transponders as they approach the western Baltic in a manoevre that is seen as dangerous to civilian air traffic, but prevents them being identified other than by sight.

Mr Vanin’s statements also come eight months after Denmark announced it would take part in Nato’s missile defence system. Denmark has said that it will install special radar systems on one or more of its frigates, in order to become an integral part of the system.

Russian military troops take part in a military drill on Sernovodsky polygon, close to the Chechnya border

But Nicolai Wammen, the Defence minister, has been at pains to calm Russia, saying that the move is not targeted at Russia, but at “rogue states, terrorist organisations and others who would have the capacity to fire missiles at Europe and the United States”.

Nevertheless, Mr Vanin made it clear that Russia feels that NATO is encroaching on its borders.

“Denmark is a small country with a small army. OK - you are part of Nato, but a very small part. Moscow will not appreciate you joining the missile defence system - or any of the other countries that take part. It will escalate a situation that is already tense and will make things even worse,” he said.

“I cannot imagine the Cold War coming back again; but there are some who feel that Nato is moving closer and closer to the Russian border and strengthening its position. That creates insecurity in Russia,” he added.

Russian ambassador to Denmark Mikhail Vanin

In follow up statements that will worry the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in particular, Mr Vanin went on to say that from being one of the most peaceful parts of the world a year ago, the Baltic is now “one of the most unpredictable in the world”.

Germany, Poland, Lithuania, the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Sweden and Denmark all border the Baltic Sea. Six of them are Nato states.

The three formerly Soviet Baltic states, now all members of Nato and the European Union, have repeatedly expressed their concern at their own situation, not least because as with Ukraine, both Estonia and Latvia in particular have large Russian populations and fear Russian encroachments.

As events in Ukraine have developed, and the Minsk Agreements remain to be fully implemented, the three Baltic states have been among the hawks in the EU and Nato, calling for increased sanctions against Russia.

“Why believe the hysteria that Lithuania is Russia’s next target? It’s just an example of very bad theatre. The only people it is good for is the weapons producers,” said Mr Vanin.

Monster US warship anchors off Portsmouth, defense chiefs downplay British shrinkage

At more than 100,000 tons, laden with warplanes and missiles and with 5,000 men and women aboard, the American Nimitz Class aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt anchored at Portsmouth has British defense chiefs talking down military cuts.

The Roosevelt – known to her crew as Big Stick – is currently moored off Portsmouth because she is simply too big to dock in the port.

Serving alongside the thousands of US sailors and marines, as part of an exchange program, are six aircraft handlers and a navigator from the Royal Navy.

In a statement on the Ministry of Defence (MoD) website, Britain's First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir George Zambrellas, lauded the US-UK defense relationship.

“It is excellent to see US Navy carrier steel in Portsmouth.

“And in barely two years we will see UK carrier steel here too,” he said, referring to the UK's two carriers, HMS Queen Elisabeth and the planned HMS Prince of Wales

“We warmly welcome the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group – a reflection of the close partnership between our nations and navies, and the value of credible sea power in support of our shared national interests.”

The carrier is in the UK for five days, having made the initial transatlantic leg of her round-the-world operational mission to project US military power around the globe.

But the arrival of so potent a symbol of American might comes at a time when civilian and military defense chiefs on both sides of the Atlantic are airing their concerns over Britain's willingness and capacity to commit to the symbolic NATO contribution of 2 percent of gross domestic product (GDP).

British Defense Secretary Michael Fallon downplayed fears.

“The USS Theodore Roosevelt’s visit shows yet again that UK/US relations are as close as ever. Ten days ago, I was the first of his counterparts to meet incoming Defence Secretary Ash Carter.

“Having the Roosevelt in Portsmouth today is yet another example of the world’s broadest, deepest and most enduring defense relationship at work. I’m thrilled to be going aboard today to welcome the crew personally.”

Yet behind this Atlanticist ardor, a narrative of fear over defense cuts has come to dominate in recent months.

Writing in the Telegraph on Monday, Fallon sketched out the broad range of threats he believes Britain confronts.

“In Eastern Europe, Russia is subverting democracy – seeking to change international borders by force and destabilizing a sovereign state,” wrote Fallon.
“In the Middle East, the ISIL (Islamic State) death cult is spreading a new form of fascism in its warped drive to create a caliphate spanning Syria and Iraq. And in Africa, another jihadist franchise, Boko Haram, is causing chaos in northern Nigeria and along its borders.”

Yet he downplayed concerns about impending strategic impotence, and to some extent buttressed the view on defense taken by Prime Minister David Cameron, writing: “Our Armed Forces now rest on firm financial foundations.

“National security is underpinned by economic security, which is why we have gone from a £38-billion black hole in the defense budget left by Labour, to a properly funded £34-billion-a-year budget. After taking some tough decisions, we still have the largest defense budget in the EU and the second largest in NATO.”

“We are one of only four NATO countries meeting the target to spend 2 percent of our GDP on defense and we will do so this year and next.”
In early March, US Army Chief of Staff General Raymond Odierno said he was “very concerned” about military austerity given the deeply “uncertain global environment.”

“We have a bilateral agreement between our two countries to work together. It is about having a partner that has very close values and the same goals as we do,” explained Odierno at the New America Foundation’s ‘Future of War’ conference.

“What has changed, though, is the level of capability. In the past we would have a British Army division working alongside an American army division,” he added. Cuts mean the US Army now expects Britain to provide only half its previous commitment.

Despite fears of British military decline – many of which were expressed in a much-hyped but poorly attended Commons debate on defense reductions two week ago – UK defense spending remains the sixth highest in the world.

An intercontinental ballistic missile was fired early Monday from a facility in California, the US Air Force announced, saying the tests were a message to the world about Washington's nuclear capabilities.

The Minuteman III missile was fitted with a “test re-entry vehicle” instead of a live thermonuclear warhead, and was test-launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base (AFB) in California at 03:36 local time (10:36 GMT), according to the Air Force statement.

"With these launches, we not only verify our processes and the ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missile) weapon system, we provide a visual to the world that the Minuteman III is capable of striking pretty much anywhere with extreme precision," said Lt. Col Tytonia Moore of the 90th Missile Wing, based out of the Francis E. Warren AFB in Wyoming, according to the statement.

The "Mighty Ninety" is one of the USAF’s three missile wing commands – the other two being the 91st at Minot AFB in North Dakota and the 341st at Malstrom AFB in Montana. There are roughly 450 ICBMs between the three.

Since Peacekeeper missiles were retired under the START II treaty, the LGM-30G Minuteman-III is the only land-based ICBM in US service. The silo-launched, ground-attack guided missile is normally equipped with W87 thermonuclear warheads.

Drills for me but not for thee: NATO launches war games near Russian border

Vandenberg, home to the 30th Space Wing of the USAF Space Command (AFSPC), has conducted multiple missile tests over the years, most recently in September 2014. In April 2013, a test was postponed for a month due to tensions with North Korea.

According to the US Air Force, the ICBM test launch program “demonstrates the operational credibility of the Minuteman III and ensures the United States’ ability to maintain a strong, credible nuclear deterrent as a key element of US national security and the security of U.S. allies and partners.”

The missile test comes amid massive NATO war games across Eastern Europe. Meanwhile, the Russian military has deployed 76,000 troops, over 10,000 vehicles, 65 warships, 16 support vessels, 15 submarines, and 200 warplanes and helicopters for surprise drills across the country.

    That... is very... surprising.

the US Air Force announced, saying the tests were a message to the world about Washington's nuclear capabilities.
I do not believe that at ANY time in history we have "said" something like that. We do not, in general "beat our chests" and say "we can nuke you".

Normally, we would have said "this is a regularly scheduled test" and left it at that.

    Who said that, I wonder?

If we're acting like turd worlders, we might as well go all the way and slap our gorilla chests and say "Fuck you! No, FUCK YOU!" at them.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will conduct training of some 30,000 military personnel in Spain, Italy and Portugal this fall, NATO Supreme Allied Commander Transformation Gen. Jean-Paul Palomeros said on Wednesday.
“[In] October, November we will train around 30,000 in the south — in Spain, Italy, Portugal,” Gen. Palomeros told journalists at a press conference in Washington, DC.

The NATO Commander noted it is “a great demonstration that NATO is doing its business,” preparing for the whole spectrum of possible threats to the Alliance on its southern flank.

On March 2, US 173rd Airborne Brigade Commander Michael Foster told Sputnik that the United States will be expanding in the next four months its commitment to NATO’s Operation Atlantic Resolve with a brigade-level deployment to Bulgaria and Romania.
Operation Atlantic Resolve was agreed to by the Alliance in June 2014 in response to some alleged "Russian aggression". The Operation is intended to reassure NATO allies of the Alliance’s collective security commitment to all member states, according to NATO.

    Clearly... we are not:

Are we ready for an attack on the power grid?

posted at 10:31 am on March 25, 2015 by Jazz Shaw

This is a disturbing statistic. Federal energy records indicate that there is an attack – either physical or cyber – on the United States power grid, on average, every three to four days. But before we get into too much of a panic, this doesn’t sound like some sort of concerted terrorist strategy. Still, a definite cause for concern.
About once every four days, part of the nation’s power grid — a system whose failure could leave millions in the dark — is struck by a cyber or physical attack, a USA TODAY analysis of federal energy records finds.
Although the repeated security breaches have never resulted in the type of cascading outage that swept across the Northeast in 2003, they have sharpened concerns about vulnerabilities in the electric system. A widespread outage lasting even a few days could disable devices ranging from ATMs to cellphones to traffic lights, and could threaten lives if heating, air conditioning and health care systems exhaust their backup power supplies.
Some experts and officials fear the rash of smaller-scale incidents may point to broader security problems, raising questions about what can be done to safeguard the electrical grid from an attack that could leave millions without power for days or weeks, with potentially devastating consequences.
While cyber attacks garner a lot of the media attention, they aren’t as numerous as the headline numbers would indicate. The report lists 362 attacks on power stations and utilities between 2011 and 2014, but of those, only 14 were cyber attacks. The vast majority of assaults were “physical” in nature and the method may come as something of a surprise. People are shooting up transformers. A lot of these might be attributed to random acts of vandalism or drunken stunts by teenagers. In 2013, however, there was an actual assault which was clearly more than just dangerous hijinks.
Some of the worst fears of those in charge of the power grid’s security came true shortly before 1 a.m. on April 16, 2013, when unknown attackers unleashed a coordinated attack on Pacific Gas & Electric’s Metcalf substation in northern California.
The attackers severed six underground fiber-optic lines before firing more than 100 rounds of ammunition at the substation’s transformers, causing more than $15 million in damage.
The intentional act of sabotage, likely involving more than one gunman, was unlike any previous attack on the nation’s grid in its scale and sophistication.
The Metcalf attack was fairly well covered in the press, but the story faded quickly from the national consciousness. The reason for this is something which might inspire a bit more confidence in the current system than some analysts are demonstrating. Even though the attackers essentially destroyed some huge, expensive transformers and severed multiple cables, there was no power outage as a result of it. The grid adjusted, shifted the loads and kept the power flowing. To take out a large section of the grid takes a bit more effort – and knowledge – than that.
But that’s not to say that it can’t happen. The report indicates that the majority of these physical attacks take place at substations which have minimal security to say the least. They generally have a chain link fence around them, a few lights and – in some cases – a rather low tech security camera. This seems to be proven by the fact that the multiple, well armed individuals who took out the Metcalf station were never apprehended, nor were the people who shot up dozens of other stations around the country. They also note that industry reps express concerns that local police generally don’t treat these incidents as very serious crimes, thinking of them more along the lines of somebody breaking windows or knocking over gravestones.
All of this does point to a security vulnerability, though, and the industry needs to step up and beef up their protection. We’re not seeing a massive outage at this point because none of these incidents were large scale, coordinated attacks. But the fact that it seems to be so easy means that things could go downhill quickly if someone actually does try this on a large scale.

Default Re: World War Three Thread....

This article is from January 2014.

I'm posting it here because recently (above) it was discovered we're having as many as 1 attack every four days on the grid.

She started warning us. *I* have been warning us. A couple of Congressmen are warning us.

ALL of the warnings are falling on deaf ears of those who can make a difference.

'Our Death Toll Would Be Staggering': Judge Jeanine on Power Grid Threats
As seen on Justice With Judge Jeanine

The following is the transcript of Judge Jeanine Pirro's opening statement regarding threats to our nation's power grid.

Welcome to a special edition of Justice - I'm Judge Jeanine Pirro. Tonight - an hour long investigation into the dangers facing the U.S. power grid. What would it take to bring it down? And if our system did break down - how would you survive? And what would it be like in the dark?

Last month - i went to a meeting in Manhattan in the freezing cold. But when I came out of that meeting, I was frozen - not from the bitter temperatures - but from fear.

I learned things that *no one* is talking about... Things that can change my life, your life, and the lives of everyone you know... forever.

I started thinking about how fragile life is - and how ill-prepared we are for this.

Tonight - in an exclusive Justice investigation - the vulnerability of America's power system - the United States' electric grid. Are we ready for a terror attack - and what would we do if the lights go out?

Tonight is about a series of forces and individuals who instead of doing the right thing for you and me are playing politics and are gambling with your safety and way of life.

Who of us could ever envision 9/11 happening? But the difference between 9/11 and what I'm about to tell you is that we *know* this can happen - the question is not *will* it happen but *when* will it happen.

And the consequences would be a million times worse than 9/11. One day you're enjoying the comforts of life... The next - everything is different. Civilization as you know it would be gone.

An electromagnetic pulse would destroy all electronics, and the transformers that power *everything"... *anything* with an on/off switch. Your hot water heater. Your refrigerator. Your dialysis machine. Hospitals are closed. Grocery shelves are empty - most of the food you have at home is spoiled.

And forget about your bank accounts. What you have in your pocket is all you can access.

I imagine myself waking up to total darkness - nothing in my home working. Food spoiled. Water not running. I rummage through whatever last cans of food i can find. I'm alone - because my kids and loved ones have no way to get to me.

I'm afraid to leave because it's too dangerous. People are desperate and hungry. Our civilization thrown back to the dark ages.

I'm scared. Helpless. And I don't know *how* I will survive.

If there were to be such a catastrophic failure, our death toll would be staggering.

A blue ribbon commission predicting mass fatalities, horrific loss of life... Some say 9 out of 10 Americans would die.

This is not science fiction - it's *real*.

Tonight - we'll tell you about the ways this could happen:
    A solar flare.
    An electromagnetic pulse.
    A nuclear device.
    Cyber attack.
Or a simple physical assault - all of which would break down our society as we know it.

In this complicated world we live in, many wish America destruction. But it is he who has the capacity, ability, and inclination to act on that ill will against whom we must be vigilant.

Scientists say an EMP created by a nuclear weapon at high altitude is the most efficient way to take out America's electric grid, telecommunication networks and all critical infrastructures.

As I stand here now - North Korea has a satellite the size and weight of a small nuclear weapon orbiting at an altitude conducive to an EMP attack and it approaches our country from the south - a direction which lacks early warning or missile defenses.

The threat can also be from the sea.

Fact: Six month ago, two full up nuclear capable missiles on their launchers were discovered in Panama on a North Korean flagged vessel hidden under sugar bags.

Reports are that our grid has already been penetrated by our enemies leaving behind software programs that can compromise it.

There are other ways to take down our grid. A simple direct physical attack like an assault on a local sub station.

Fact: Ten months ago, unknown attackers attempted to blow up a San Jose transformer substation in a military style raid.

No one has been apprehended. The FBI and local police call it vandalism. As if Billy Bob and Bubba - after a few beers - get their hands on AK-47s and surgically knock out 17 transformers and 16 circuit breakers *after* cutting underground fiber optic cables and outsmarting security cameras and motion sensors.

These terrorists are still out there.

Less than a week later - in a shockingly similar attack in Tennessee - a suspect on a boat fired shots at a nuclear power plant, then engaged police. A trespasser? Someone armed from the water willing to engage in a shootout with law enforcement is *certainly* not Bubba with a few beers in him.

Even if *no one* attacks our grid - the sun will.

The earth is exposed to intense solar flaring roughly every 150 years. The last time it occurred was 1859. Do the math - we're due.

I'm not saying this to panic anyone - but *everyone* - including our enemies, know that an artificially created electromagnetic pulse will shut down all power... which risks our survival.

We possess the world's largest power distribution system. What is our government doing to make sure that our grid - likened be some to that of a third world country - is protected?

Are we ready for an attack on our grid and the catastrophic failure that would result?

Hardcore Confirmation-A Major Attack That Will Annihilate the USA Is Announced and It Could Happen At Any Given Moment! USA Prepares For the Worst! (Videos)

    Wednesday, March 25, 2015 12:35

    (Before It's News)
Suspected for years of plotting to dismantle the U.S. electric grid, American officials have confirmed that Iranian military brass have endorsed a nuclear electromagnetic pulse explosion that would attack the country’s power system. American defense experts made the discovery while translating a secret Iranian military handbook, raising new concerns about Tehran’s recent nuclear talks with the administration.

The issue of a nuclear EMP attack was raised in the final hours of last week’s elections in Israel when U.S. authority Peter Vincent Pry penned a column for Arutz Sheva warning of Iran’s threat to free nations. ”Iranian military documents describe such a scenario — including a recently translated Iranian military textbook that endorses nuclear EMP attack against the United States,” he wrote. A knowledgable source said that the textbook discusses an EMP attack on America in 20 different places. Arizona Republican Rep. Trent Franks, who is leading an effort to protect the U.S. electric grid from an EMP attack, has recently made similar claims based on the document translated by military authorities. —Prophecy News Watch

USA Braces For Big Power Grid Attack-One Alone Will Devastate Entire Nation!

According to an article in USA Today released March 24, 2015, the USA is bracing for a BIG power grid attack. —More often than once a week, the physical and computerized security mechanisms intended to protect Americans from widespread power outages are affected by attacks, with less severe cyberattacks happening even more often. —Transformers and other critical equipment often sit in plain view, protected only by chain-link fencing and a few security cameras.

—Suspects have never been identified in connection with many of the 300-plus attacks on electrical infrastructure since 2011. —An organization funded by the power industry writes and enforces the industry’s own guidelines for security, and decreased the number of security penalties it issued by 30% from 2013 to 2014, leading to questions about oversight. Jon Wellinghoff, former chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, said the power grid is currently “too susceptible to a cascading outage” because of its reliance on a small number of critical substations and other physical equipment.
It was further stated that between 2011 and 2014, electric utility companies reported 362 physical and cyberattacks that were responsible for outages and/or other power disturbances to the U.S. Department of Energy. Out of those attacks, 14 of them were cyberattacks while the rest were physical in nature.

The below are some of those incidents:

—2011, intruder gains access to a critical hydro-electric converter station in Vermont by crushing a lock on a door.
—2013, gunman fires multiple shots at a gas turbine power plant along the Missouri-Kansas border.
—Again in 2013, four bullets are fired from a highway striking a power substation outside Colorado Springs.

Disturbing is the fact that of all three incidents, no suspects were ever apprehended. Federal data reveals these types of attacks are not rare within the widespread, interdependent network of transformers, power lines and other equipment that make up the electrical grid.

But what defines an attack? And, how many are actually getting reported as an actual attack? More often than not, these types of incidents are shrugged off by the local police who are called upon to investigate.

For example, in March 2013, security officers at the Jacksonville Electric Authority in Florida noticed a man climbing a fence surrounding St. Johns River Power Park, which produces energy for 250,000 northern Florida households. When approached, the man fled according to Jacksonville Electric Authority spokeswoman Gerri Boyce. He was later observed trying to enter a second facility, but fled again and was never caught. Shockingly enough, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office documents reveal that no one ever filed a police report!

    According to USA Today News,

While the Department of Energy received only 14 reports of cyberattacks from utilities over the past four years, other reporting systems show rising cyberthreats.

The branch of the Department of Homeland Security that monitors cyberthreats received reports of 151 “cyber incidents” related to the energy industry in 2013 — up from 111 in 2012 and 31 in 2011. It is uncertain whether the increase is due to more incidents or an increase in reporting.

Scott Aaronson, senior director of national security for the Edison Electric Institute, a Washington, D.C., group representing electric utilities, said it’s difficult to draw trends from figures reported by utilities because of loose definitions of what constitutes a cyber incident.

Even Rabbi Jonathan Cahn, NYT Bestselling Author of the Harbinger, issued a warning for 2015-1016. Pay close attention to the the highlight:

“I will state a warning which I have stated before,” Cahn told hundreds of people gathered at the Prophecy in the News conference in Orlando, Florida, this weekend. “Whether it comes in this time parameter of the Shemitah or the year following or not, I believe a great shaking is going to come to this land and to the world that will involve the collapsing of the American economy … and the removal of its blessings and prosperity. Whether it begins with the economic realm or not, I believe it’s going to be bigger than the economic realm and it may have the effect of famine or cutting off infrastructure for a time. The shaking doesn’t have to take place in the Shemitah (year), but I believe we need to be ready.” —End Time Headlines

Back to Iran’s plans to obliterate the USA through EMP. Frank Gaffney, founder and president of the Center for Security Policy, also explained that the threat posed to the grid can come from solar activity. He has been pushing Washington hard, as well as state governments, to make a move that is not costly in order to protect the grid, though his concerns are more with a nuclear EMP attack by Iran or North Korea.

He said, ”It is increasingly frightening. We have to get started on this.”

He also mentioned Iran’s top military leader recently announced his intentions to make war with the USA. In 2014, Iranian Armed Forces Chief of Staff General Hassan Firouzabadi was quoted in Iran’s Fars News Agency stating, ”We are ready for the decisive battle against the U.S. and the Zionist regime.”

U.S. authority Peter Vincent Pry’s column clearly discusses an Iranian EMP attack:

Iran armed with nuclear missiles poses an unprecedented threat to global civilization.

One nuclear warhead detonated at high-altitude over the United States would blackout the national electric grid and other life sustaining critical infrastructures for months or years by means of an electromagnetic pulse (EMP). A nationwide blackout lasting one year, according to the Congressional EMP Commission, could cause chaos and starvation that leaves 90 percent of Americans dead.

Iranian military documents describe such a scenario–including a recently translated Iranian military textbook that endorses nuclear EMP attack against the United States.

Should citizens of the United States be concerned at this point? After all, it could happen, and even just one could near annihilate the entire nation! Oh, of course not! After all, according to the naysayers, the libs, and the trolls, nothing is happening at all. It’s all just heresay! Hopefully I won’t sticking around to see the look on all their faces when they find out how wrong they truly are.

    Washington Secrets: National Security
Iran endorses nuclear EMP attack on United States

Suspected for years of plotting to dismantle the U.S. electric grid, American officials have confirmed that Iranian military brass have endorsed a nuclear electromagnetic pulse explosion that would attack the country's power system.
American defense experts made the discovery while translating a secret Iranian military handbook, raising new concerns about Tehran's recent nuclear talks with the administration.

"Iranian military documents describe such a scenario — including a recently translated Iranian military textbook that endorses nuclear EMP attack against the United States," he wrote.
A knowledgable source said that the textbook discusses an EMP attack on America in 20 different places.
Arizona Republican Rep. Trent Franks, who is leading an effort to protect the U.S. electric grid from an EMP attack, has recently made similar claims based on the document translated by military authorities.
Once sneered at by critics, recent moves by Iran and North Korea have given credibility to the potential EMP threat from an atmospheric nuclear explosion over the U.S.
Pry has suggested ways for Iran to deliver a nuclear attack: by ship launched off the East Coast, a missile or via satellite.
Either way the result could be destruction of all or part of the U.S. electric grid, robbing the public of power, computers, water and communications for potentially a year.
RELATED: Is Iran playing the U.S. in the nuclear talks?
Frank Gaffney, founder and president of the Center for Security Policy, said the threat to the grid can also come from solar activity.
He has been pushing Washington and state governments to take the relatively inexpensive move to protect the electric grid, though his concern is from a nuclear attack by Iran or North Korea.
"It is increasingly frightening," he said. "We have to get started on this."
He noted that Iran's top military leader recently announced that he was ready for war with the U.S.
"We are ready for the decisive battle against the U.S. and the Zionist regime," Iranian Armed Forces Chief of Staff General Hassan Firouzabadi told Iran's Fars News Agency in 2014.
Below is from Pry's column that discusses an Iran EMP attack:

Iran armed with nuclear missiles poses an unprecedented threat to global civilization.

One nuclear warhead detonated at high-altitude over the United States would blackout the national electric grid and other life sustaining critical infrastructures for months or years by means of an electromagnetic pulse (EMP). Iranian military documents describe such a scenario--including a recently translated Iranian military textbook that endorses nuclear EMP attack against the United States.

Thus, Iran with a small number of nuclear missiles can by EMP attack threaten the existence of modernity and be the death knell for Western principles of international law, humanism and freedom. For the first time in history, a failed state like Iran could destroy the most successful societies on Earth and convert an evolving benign world order into world chaos.

The US Just Held Long-Range Bomber Drills Over An Area Russia Wants

Two pairs of B-52H Stratofortress bombers, from Barksdale AFB and from Minot AFB, streaked north last week on a long-range exercise dubbed “Polar Growl.” One set of bombers would end up over the far reaches of the North Sea, while the other would cruise high above the Polar Icecap, both areas where Putin’s Russia is increasing its presence. This doesn’t seem like a coincidence.

The whole affair had three main objectives. First, to test and see how US Strategic Command could handle two separate missions, heading into two separate areas, at the same time. Second, to inter-operate with allied air forces and give crews familiarity with mock foreign intercepts. And third, to give B-52 crews experience navigating the extreme northerly latitudes. STRATCOM boss Admiral Cecil Haney described the value of the exercise:

“These flights, demonstrating the credible and flexible ability of our strategic bomber force in internationally-recognized flight information regions, are the culmination of months of planning and coordination… They are one of many ways we demonstrate interoperability, compliance with national and international protocols, and due regard for the safety of all aircraft sharing the air space.”

Obama concedes deal could leave Iran closer to atomic bomb

    By Geoff Earle

WASHINGTON — President Obama is conceding something many of his critics fear: that Iran could end up much closer to developing an atomic bomb at the end of the nuclear agreement now being negotiated.

“They’re not going to have been able to hoard a bunch of uranium that somehow they then convert to weapons-grade uranium,” Obama told NPR in an interview that aired Tuesday.

“What is a more relevant fear would be that in year 13, 14, 15, they have advanced centrifuges that enrich uranium fairly rapidly, and at that point, the breakout times would have shrunk almost down to zero.

“…but at that point we have much better ideas about what it is that their program involves. We have much more insight into their capabilities. And the option of a future president to take action if in fact they try to obtain a nuclear weapon is undiminished.”

The US and Iran, along with international partners, reached a “framework” deal last week that is meant to keep Iran a year away from “breakout” to build a nuclear bomb. The US says it’s just two or three months away now.

But many of the toughest restrictions in the agreement expire after a decade. Others vanish in 15 years, although international inspections would stay in place indefinitely in accordance with existing agreements.

Meanwhile, Iran gets to keep its know-how and its equipment — even as it exports most of its stockpile to a location that isn’t spelled out in the deal.

Critics say this raises the possibility Tehran is playing a waiting game, and would make a bomb after the sanctions and restrictions get lifted.

Obama contends that the US would still have the means it has now to intervene if needed, which could refer to military or other avenues.

Another potential weakness is that a future president could simply stop granting waiver authority to sanctions relief negotiated by Obama.

But Obama says he’s not worried about that possibility.

“I am confident that any president who gets elected will be knowledgeable enough about foreign policy and knowledgeable enough about the traditions and precedents of presidential power that they won’t start calling to question the capacity of the executive branch of the United States to enter into agreements with other countries,” he told NPR.
