    Default The Library

Starting this thread to share info regarding good articles/books/etc you've read.

Here are a few from the last year or so that I recommend.

    1. The Lonesome Dove series by Larry McMurtry- Dead Man’s Walk, Commanche Moon, Lonesome Dove, Streets of Laredo

    2. Love and Hate In Jamestown - David A. Price

    3. Every Second Counts - Lance Armstrong

    4. I Will Bear Witness - Victor Klemperer

    5. The March Up, Taking Baghdad With The Unites States Marines - Bing West and Major General Ray L. Smith, USMC (Ret.)

    6. In The Company of Heroes - CWO4 Michael Durant, USA (Ret.)

    7. Letters From The Desk of Ronald Reagan

    8. Dead Heat - Joel C. Rosenberg

    9. The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress - Robert A. Heinlein

    10. Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee - Dee Brown

    11. Lone Survivor - Marcus Luttrell

    12. One Ranger and One Ranger Returns (currently reading) - H. Joaquin Jackson

    13. Kazik, Memoirs of a Warsaw Ghetto Fighter

And I’m leaving right now to go to Barnes and Nobles and pick up House to House by David Bellavia.

I've got a slew of books I recommend reading and also ones that I have yet to read but think look good.

I'll post up a list later.

Looking forward to seeing your list, Ryan.

I highly recommend folks buy a membership to Barnes and Noble, if you shop there.

I've been a member for close to 10 years. The membership is $25.00 per year, and in my case, pays for itself. Coupla times a year, they mail coupons out also. The membership price-reduction also applies to periodicals.

House to House originally cost $15.00, but my membership combined with a 15% off coupon they mailed me reduced the price to $11.47.

About a month ago, my membership reduced the price of 3 books I bought by over $9.00.

I have more books than the ones here but, I rank these higher...

Books I Have and Read and Recommend
    • New Lies for Old - Anatoliy Golitsyn
    • Red Cocaine - Joseph Douglas
    • Deception - Edward Epstein
    • Red Dragon Rising - Edward Timperlake and William Triplett
    • Betrayal - Bill Gertz
    • Year of the Rat - Edward Timperlake and William Triplett
    • The Coming Conflict With China - Richard Bernstein and Ross Munro
    • The China Threat - Bill Gertz
    • Red Horizons - Ion Mihai Pacepa
Books I Have and Need to Read
    • Through the Eyes of the Enemy - Stanislav Lunev
    • Dereliction of Duty - Lt. Col. Robert Patterson
    • Treachery - Bill Gertz
    • Unrestricted Warfare - Col. Qiao Liang and Col. Wang Xiangsui
    • China: The Gathering Threat - Constantine Menges
    • Origins of the Fourth World War - Jeff Nyquist
I am slowly making way through The Perestroika Deception by Anatoliy Golitsyn but free time is far and few between and other things always seem to take precedence over reading.

Also, I've found that the best way to score books is to just get them used. Many in the above list I have picked up for $5 shipped to me off eBay. Others I have gotten at surplus book sales for a fraction of the price they are new. I'll be honest and say that I don't tend to buy books from places like B&N, Borders, etc. They tend to be WAY too expensive that way.

I think there is a 1/2 price book store here in town, and I may check on that.

Also, I've read half of House To House, and it is a grand read.

It's graphic, violent, and the language is vulgar - so you're forewarned.

There is a truly FANTASTIC book store named "Half Price Books". When I go to Dallas I have always stopped in, except on my last trip through in Sept '07.

They have locations in various places, and here is where:

At times there are gems at the libraries. About a month ago on the sales shelf in one of the neighborhood libraries, I bought for one whole dollar in practically brand new condition a book on tape that retails for $19.99: Sun Tzu "Art of War".

Aplomb and Rick, I've been wanting to read those books for quite a while, but I just kinda forgot about them.

I've added them to my list.

I keep a running list of what to buy.

Dang, you folks read a lot of pretty heavy stuff! I suppose the last intellectual book I read was Steppenwolf,by Herman Hesse way back in school.

As a kid I usually read paperbacks so I don't have a large collection of hardbacks. I actually had the complete series of Doc Savage until I gave them to my little sister.

I lean towards the classics, Mark Twain or Art Buchwald being a couple of my favorite authors.

I had borrowed an English translation of the Koran but found it fairly hard to understand. Perhaps it was in the translation?

I read the first three volumes of the Left Behind series, but just lost interest after awhile.

Currently I am catching up on back issues of Popular Mechanics and Popular Science magazines. I used to enjoy early editions of Omni.

With the advent of the Internet my trips to the library have diminished greatly!

I wonder if I can get credit for Penthouse Forum..........hmmmm?

Backstop and Ryan have these lists of books that I can only hope to read by the time I die. I think I finish about 2 a year and I re-read most books at least once either because of enjoyment or personal artistic value in seeing how a book was written--or because it was a difficult read for me, sorry to say, I didn't understand much of what I forced myself to make the time to read.

I wonder if instructions for my new phone, for the sewing machine, for the small engine repair, the vehicle owners manual, and my camera instructions and reading how to patch a bike inner tube that was included in the package count. lol

I bought The Last Of The Mohicans a while back, but just couldn't read the darn thing. Talk about run-on sentences... Some paragraphs were just one! Then the style of writing just made it too tough to follow and enjoy.

And this reminded me I wanted to re-read Swiss Family Robinson. I haven’t read it since HS.

Aplomb, if the instructions for your phone are anything like mine, you'd need a PhD to understand them.

It appears Sam's Club has some good deals on books.

Today I bought Michael Durant's The Night Stalkers for $9.88. The printed price for the book is $15.00. His previous book In The Company of Heroes was a great read, so this should follow suit.

So I picked up a book called "SolFleet" by Glenn Smith.

He works in our security department. It's first in a series and is SF if anyone likes that stuff. He just left for two weeks to go to NY to work on a star trek episode (www.startreknewvoyages.com I think it is). He's actually IN the one that will be released soon, with the gal the played Tasha Yar.

He's supposed to sign my book when he gets back

Just finished reading a scifi/military novel called "Von Neuman's War". Alien probes invade the Solar System and Earth. The only hope for humanity is a group of rednecks working out of Redstone.

    Girlie man stuff follows.

Just heard a 2006 Hannity interview of Tim Russert.

They talked about and read a few passages from Mr. Russert's 2 books:
    1. Big Russ and Me
    2. Wisdom of Our Fathers: Lessons and Letters from Daughters and Sons

These sound like wonderful books about the relationship between a father and his son, and the second book seems to be explained by the title.

I'll buy these at my first opportunity.

    Girlie man stuff ends.
