A lorry ran down a large group of people in the southern French city of Nice during a suspected terrorist attack. At least 60 people are feared dead with more than 100 injured during the Bastille Day attack.
Gunshots rang out in the streets, with gunmen targeting hotels and cafes in the port city as residents were warned to lock themselves in doors for their safety. Hostages have been taken in a hotel in the city. The RAID anti-terror squad has been deployed to the city.
It is not known at this stage is whether the attack was terror related.
Hundreds of people were watching fireworks along the promenade when the attack began.
A lorry rammed into a large group of people who were celebrating Bastille Day before gunmen started firing.

In a shockingly non-politically-correct outburst, Patrick Calvar, chief of the Directorate General of Internal Security, told members of the French parliamentary commission that thanks to the increasing frequency of sexual assaults by islamic migrants, "Extremism is growing everywhere... We are on the brink of civil war."
As The Express reports, Calver said he feared an inevitable confrontation between the far right and Muslims poses more of a threat than terrorism.

He said that the situation in France is on such a knife edge that it could just take one more major Islamist terror attack to lead to a huge right-wing backlash.The fears are that the country could suffer an attack similar to the one that happened in Germany on New Year's Eve where a staggering 1,200 women were sexually abused in German cities, particularly in Cologne. Many of the suspect perpetrators were migrants of North African origin.
Speaking to the leading French newspaper, Le Figaro, Mr Calvar said: "This confrontation I think it will take place.
"Even another one or two attacks and it will happen. It therefore behooves us to anticipate and block all these groups."
"There will be a confrontation between the far right and the Muslim world."
At one point, Mr Calvar said: "Europe is in great danger, extremism is growing everywhere."
Mr Calvar's comments have come as the former MI6 boss Richard Dearlove also said that Europe faced a "populist uprising" if Governments do not take control of the migrant crisis.
And security experts in Germany have also warned Chancellor Angela Merkel that the middle class was becoming increasingly radicalised because of her open borders migrant policy.

A truck crashed into a crowd of people celebrating Bastille Day in Nice, France, on July 14, killing at least 75 and injuring at least 100, said CNN, citing French television. “There were dead bodies everywhere,” a witness told ITV, a British television network.
The death toll increased when a gunman may have alighted from the truck and started shooting.
CNN is reporting the occupant of the truck exchanged gunfire with police. It is not known if anyone else was shot; CNN says at this point it’s believe there is one assailant. UK Express cited French TV channel iTele, saying that a gunman was “holed up in a nice restaurant downtown” but has been “neutralized” by police. Photos and videos posted on social media show bodies lying in the street and there were immediate reports of dozens injured.

The large box truck drove into the crowd at the Promenade des Anglais, witnesses said. A video captured part of the attack:
The former mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, who is now a regional official, said there “appeared to be dozens of deaths,” said NBC News. In French, Estrosi Tweeted, according to NBC: “Dear Nice, the driver of a truck appears to have made dozens of deaths. Stay for the moment to your home. More info to come.” ITV reported that French officials were calling it a terrorist attack and that “there are unconfirmed reports that there are gunmen on the loose in the city.”
“All hell has broken loose in Nice,” a BBC reporter said.
Grenades were found in the attack, according to Le Figaro newspaper. Sebastien Humbert, a police official, told ITV.com, “A truck rammed into the crowd over a long distance, which explains this extremely heavy toll.” A man then emerged from the truck and started shooting, said ITV.
French television reported that the gunman had been in the truck and ran on foot to a nearby restaurant called Le Buffalo, and an officer then shot him, UK Express said. CNN reported that people in the restaurant rushed outside with white tablecloths to cover the dead and that the driver had “escalated” the truck.
There was no immediate identification of the people or groups behind the attack, but ISIS created a hashtag applauding the attack that it was encouraging people to use, according to Site Intel Group, which monitors jihadists.
Meanwhile, there was panic in Paris after thick black smoke was seen billowing out of the Eiffel Tower at the same time as the Nice attack:

Accounts are unfolding fast and are being disseminated largely over social media; details could change as more is known. Bastille Day is France’s national holiday, honoring the storming of the Bastille prison in the 1789 French Revolution.

ISIS is celebrating the apparent terrorist attack in Nice, France, on Thursday as retaliation for the death of Abu Omar al-Shishani—the terror group’s so-called “minister of war”—who was killed earlier this year by coalition forces while fighting in Iraq.
At least 70 people were killed and dozens more were injured when a truck barreled through a large crowd of people celebrating Bastille Day, a French holiday commemorating the storming of the famous Parisian fortress in 1789, an important milestone in the French Revolution. The driver of the truck reportedly was killed by French authorities.
“Oh France, you and the all Europe will never be secure until we will live secure on every inch in the land of the Caliphate,” wrote one ISIS supporter whose Twitter account has since been suspended. “This is the beginning of the attack to take the holy revenge for the killing of Abu Omar Shishani, may Allah accept him,” a jihadi posted on the ISIS al-Minbar forum shortly after the attack.

ISIS supporters have created a hashtag that translates to “#the attack on the name of Omar Shishani.” Perhaps unsurprisingly, a top U.S. official tells The Daily Beast that ISIS is already a top suspect in the attack.
The Pentagon announced earlier this year that they believed Shishani, a Chechan-born jihadist known as Omar the Chechen, was likely killed in a U.S.-led airstrike in Syria. On Wednesday, Amaq, a media outfit that regularly publishes official news on behalf of ISIS, announced that Shishani was killed while fighting in Shirqat, Iraq, a city south of Mosul.
Shishani was a trusted military advisor to ISIS Leader leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and previously had a $5 million bounty on his head. At one point, he was one of the U.S. government’s top five most wanted jihadists.
The Iraqi military is currently preparing to launch a campaign backed by U.S. warplanes and special forces to recapture Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city that was overtaken by ISIS fighters in 2014. On Monday, the Pentagon announced that President Obama planned to send an additional 560 U.S. troops to help with the offensive.

A sick poster apparently created by ISIS celebrating the terror attack on Nice is being shared on Twitter.
The image shows the Eiffel Tower in flames and a knife-wielding jihadi together with a message in Arabic.
A separate poster being circulated appears to show the group threatening Berlin next.
At least 74 people were killed when a truck ploughed into a crowd of screaming revellers killing dozens as they celebrated Bastille Day.
The driver drove at high speed for over 100 metres along the famed Promenade des Anglais seafront in the French Riviera city of Nice before hitting the mass of spectators.
The driver was shot dead, sub-prefect Sebastien Humbert told France Infos radio.

The driver pointed his tractor-trailer into the crowd and accelerated, mowing bodies over, witnesses said. Police shot the driver to death, authorities said. Nobody has claimed responsibility
Here are the latest developments in the tragedy:
• The attack in Nice, France, began when an occupant of the truck shot into the crowd and then drove for 2 kilometers along the pavement of the Boulevard des Anglais, the main street in Nice, Estrosi told CNN affiliate BFM-TV. He said police later found firearms, explosives and grenades in the truck.
• American Dominique Molina, who was watching from a balcony, said the fireworks had just ended and a crowd on the beach was disbanding. "People were flooding the streets, just walking away from the show, and I heard a lot of loud noises and people were screaming and so to the west, a big moving truck was driving on the promenade, just barreling over people and hitting -- running people over." She estimated the truck moved at 20-25 mph.
• Anti-terror prosecutors have taken over the investigation, according to BFMTV, citing the prosecutor's office.
• Preliminary information from French officials is that there was one individual in the truck, according to a U.S. law enforcement official briefed on the attack. The individual, a male, was killed by police, according to the official.
• Witness Ryan Hubbs said he encountered people on the street who'd lost multiple family members. They weren't sure what to do but waited for authorities, though that was very difficult for them.
• President Obama issued a statement condemning the attack and saying, "We stand in solidarity and partnership with France, our oldest ally, as they respond to and recover from this attack."
• U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said, "Our embassy in Paris is making every effort to account for the welfare of U.S. citizens in Nice. Any U.S. citizens in Nice should contact friends and family directly to inform them of their well being."
• Subprefect Sebastien Humbert, of the Alpes-Maritimes region, described the incident as a "major criminal attack," according to AFP.
• The driver of the truck that drove into the crowd was shot dead by police, said Pierre-Henry Brandet, a spokesman for French Interior Ministry. There was no hostage situation at any point, he said.
• U.S. President Barack Obama has been apprised of the situation in Nice and his national security team will update him, said National Security Council spokesperson Ned Price.
• Witness Tony Molina said he can see 70-100 emergency vehicles. Two helicopters have landed, he said. Bodies are covered in blue tarps and marked so emergency vehicles don't run over them, he said.
• Maryam Violet, a witness, said she was walking along the beach and saw "a ton of people on the ground and on the sidewalk." "You could see someone with a bike or a wheelchair and someone with a bag full of flowers, innocent and normal people on the beach."
• French President Francois Hollande is returning to Paris from Avignon for emergency talks at the Interior Ministry after the mass casualty incident in Nice, according to French national radio.
• Facebook has activated the Safety Check feature for people in and around the area of the attack.
• An American witness at the scene said the driver of the truck was mowing bodies over, and that he appeared to accelerate as he hit those bodies. The witness said he saw only the driver. He heard gunfire as he ran away, but did not know its source. It seemed like an accident at first, but it became apparent very quickly that it was deliberate, the witness told CNN.
• BFM posted an image of the truck that reportedly was involved in the incident. The photo shows what appears to be bullet holes in the windshield of the white truck.
• Christian Estrosi, the head of the regional council of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, said late Thursday: "Dear Nice residents, the driver of a truck appears to have caused tens of deaths. Stay for the moment in your homes. More info to come."
• Eric Dartell was eating at a restaurant on the street where the incident happened. "You can see wreckage all along the way, a body, bicycles, street lamps and debris everywhere," he said.

The now-deceased jihadi who massacred at least 84 people in Nice last night has now been identified. It’s probably no surprise to regular readers of this blog that the atrocity had a Mohammed Coefficient of 100%.
The Mirror gives the name of the Tunisian perpetrator as “Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel”, but it appears from the ID card that he had a fourth name, Salmene, making him Mohamed Salmene Lahouaiej Bouhlel.
Here’s an excerpt from the report:

This is the first picture of an ID card bearing the name of a terrorist who killed at least 84 people celebrating Bastille Day in France.
Police found documents belonging to Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, a 31-year-old French man of Tunisian descent, in the truck which ploughed through crowds in Nice.
Anti-terror officers then raided his home and arrested his ex-wife is in connection with the terror attack.
Bouhlel was known to officers for common law crimes such as theft and violence but reportedly had no known connections with extremists.
Investigating sources said his last appearance in court was as recently as March, when he was found guilty of violent conduct.
As reported by Nice Matin, he worked as a delivery driver.
His home was searched by police this morning and a number of his relatives are now being spoken to by police.
I haven’t seen any teddy bears, flowers, and candles so far, but I assume they’ll be along shortly.
