Boston Marathon bombs: Crude, unsophisticated but still deadly

The explosives used in the Boston Marathon bombs were crudely designed, leading some federal investigators to hypothesize that they were domestic rather than international in origin, three federal law enforcement officials said Tuesday.
But while unsophisticated, the devices did show signs of having been constructed by someone with at least some experience in explosives, said the officials, who would not speak publicly because the investigation was in its early stages.
“It’s somebody with some basic rudimentary skills in circuitry,” said one official. “So there’s a level of experience here. And that shows some skills.”
They said initial signs suggest the devices were concealed in backpacks and that the assailant or assailants triggered the explosions by using timing mechanisms or set them off remotely using a cellphone.
The bombing Monday did not carry the hallmark of sophisticated explosives seen in foreign terrorist attacks using suicide bombers or improvised explosive devices planted along roadsides, they said. The bombs did not appear to have used plastic explosives, for example. And the white smoke seen on videos of the blast indicates it was “not a pristine military device” which would have emitted dark smoke.
“These look like crude devices. Unsophisticated,” said another official.
Another indicator that the blast did not have international origins is that no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and no further threats have been issued. Foreign terrorists often boast, and warn of more attacks to come.
Instead, “everything’s gone quiet,” said one official.
“Pecking marks” in a wall near the blast indicate that small nails were used as shrapnel, consistent with reports from doctors that they found small nails in the bodies of those killed and wounded.
If the bombs were set off by timing devices, the assailant could have placed the bombs near the marathon finish line and then fled the scene, officials said. If set off by a charge from a cellphone call, the assailant could have been “blocks away, across town or even out of state,” one official said.
Even though no suspects have emerged, authorities said there are enough good leads and “plenty of signs” left at the scene for investigators to work on.
“This is going to be going on for weeks,” one official said of the investigation. “We’re waiting to see, waiting to hear, where the new details lead us. We’re getting more guys on the ground there, and they will start analyzing the fragments left from the devices.”
Authorities said they hoped to find enough remains of a pipe or backpack to trace those items back to when and where they were purchased, and also look for any recent chemical explosives that were sold in the Boston area. “We might be able to run it back to a warehouse,” one official said.
They said they also can trace the type of digital clock used in a timing device, if the clock was placed in an “upper pocket” of a backpack and “shot away from the blast.” As one official said, “we would want to know where that clock came from.”
And they said they might be able to “run back” any cellphone calls. “But those calls can be difficult, unless the call was made close to the impact,” one official said.
Officials also hope to recover bomb residue from the bodies of those killed and injured, as well as from the shoes and clothing of other spectators.
They added that videos from the scene and interviews with witnesses are crucial, but also sometimes confusing. They said, for instance, there were reports from witnesses of a man with two backpacks near the scene before the blast.
“But who watching the race wasn’t carrying a backpack or a bag or something?” said one official.
Officials said attacking the finish line of the very popular race was an assault on a “choke point of people crowded together.”
One official said the assailant or assailants “wanted the bombs to go off simultaneously for the most damage.”

On Monday afternoon, the New York Post published a dramatic report that was widely aggregated and shared by thousands: The Rupert Murdoch-owned tabloid claimed that 12 people were killed by explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, and that a suspect -- a Saudi Arabian male -- was being questioned at a Boston hospital. At the time of the report, Boston Police officials were reporting a death toll of two (which has since been raised to three); the Post was the first to report that any suspects were in custody.
As the story began to circulate widely on Twitter -- with little corroboration from more-reputable news sources -- skepticism grew.

The Boston marathon bombs were explosives packed in 6-litre pressure cookers and placed in black duffel bags, according to a source close to the investigation.
They said the explosives were placed on the ground and contained shards of metal, nails and ball bearings. They did not want to be named.
The source said police have some of the bomb components but did not yet know what was used to set off the explosives.
President Barack Obama said the bombings were an act of terrorism but investigators do not know if they were carried out by an international or domestic organisation, or perhaps by a "malevolent individual."
One of the bombs contained shards of metal and ball bearings, and another contained nails, the source said.
Pressure cooker explosives have been used in Afghanistan, India, Nepal and Pakistan, according to a July 2010 joint FBI and Homeland Security intelligence report. One of the three devices used in the May 2010 Times Square attempted bombing was a pressure cooker, the intelligence report said.
"Placed carefully, such devices provide little or no indication of an impending attack," the report said.
Typically, these bombs have an initiator, switch and explosive charge, according to the Homeland Security Department.

Investigation: No Evidence of Broader Plot Tied to Boston Marathon Bombing
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says there is no evidence that the bombings at the Boston Marathon are part of a wider plot.
Napolitano says DHS will maintain what she called "enhanced security measures at transportation hubs" as a precaution.
The bombs that ripped through the crowd at the Boston Marathon, killing three people and wounding more than 170, were fashioned out of pressure cookers and packed with metal shards, nails and ball bearings to inflict maximum carnage, a person briefed on the investigation said Tuesday.
The details on the apparently crude but deadly explosives emerged as investigators appealed to the public for amateur video and photos that might yield clues to who carried out the attack.
The chief FBI agent in Boston vowed "we will go to the ends of the Earth" to find those responsible.
A person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still going on said the explosives were put in 6-liter kitchen pressure cookers, hidden in black duffel bags and left on the ground. They were packed with shrapnel, the person said.
The person said law enforcement officials have some of the bomb components but do not yet know what was used to set off the explosives.
A doctor treating the wounded appeared to corroborate the person's account, saying one of the victims was maimed by what looked like ball bearings or BBs. Doctors also said they removed a host of sharp objects from the victims, including nails that were sticking out of one little girl's body.
At the White House, President Barack Obama said that the bombings were an act of terrorism but that investigators do not know if they were carried out by an international organization, a domestic group or a "malevolent individual."
He added: "The American people refuse to be terrorized."
Across the U.S., from Washington to Los Angeles, police stepped up security, monitoring landmarks, government buildings, transit hubs and sporting events. Security was especially tight in Boston, with bomb-sniffing dogs checking Amtrak passengers' luggage at South Station and transit police patrolling with rifles.
"They can give me a cavity search right now and I'd be perfectly happy," said Daniel Wood, a video producer from New York City who was waiting for a train.
Similar pressure-cooker explosives have been used in Afghanistan, India, Nepal and Pakistan, according to a July 2010 intelligence report by the FBI and Homeland Security. Also, one of the three devices used in the May 2010 Times Square attempted bombing was a pressure cooker, the report said.
"Placed carefully, such devices provide little or no indication of an impending attack," the report said.
The Pakistani Taliban, which claimed responsibility for the 2010 attempt in Times Square, has denied any role in the Boston Marathon attack.
The two bombs blew up about 10 seconds and around 100 yards apart Monday near the finish line of the 26.2-mile race, tearing off limbs, knocking people off their feet and leaving the streets stained with blood and strewn with broken glass. The dead included an 8-year-old boy.
"We started grabbing tourniquets and started tying legs. A lot of people amputated," said Roupen Bastajian, a state trooper from Smithfield, R.I., who had just finished the race when he heard the explosions.
Gov. Deval Patrick said that contrary to earlier reports, no unexploded bombs were found.
Federal investigators said no one had claimed responsibility for the bombings, which took place at the world's best-known distance race, held every year on one of Boston's biggest holidays, Patriots' Day.
"We will go to the ends of the Earth to identify the subject or subjects who are responsible for this despicable crime, and we will do everything we can to bring them to justice," said Richard DesLauriers, FBI agent in charge in Boston.
He said investigators had received "voluminous tips" and were interviewing witnesses and analyzing the crime scene.
Boston police and firefighter unions announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to arrests in the bombing.
At a news conference, police and federal agents repeatedly appealed for any video, audio and photos taken by marathon spectators, even images that people might not think are significant.
"There has to be hundreds, if not thousands, of photos and videos" that might help investigators, state police Col. Timothy Alben said.
Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis said investigators also gathered a large number of surveillance tapes from businesses in the area and intend to go through the videos frame by frame.
"This is probably one of the most photographed areas in the country yesterday," he said.
FBI agents searched an apartment in the Boston suburb of Revere overnight, and investigators were seen leaving with brown paper bags, plastic trash bags and a duffel bag. But it was unclear whether the tenant had anything to do with the attack.
A law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release details of the investigation said the man had been tackled by a bystander, then police, as he ran from the scene of the explosions.
But the official said it is possible the man was simply running away to protect himself from the blast, as many others did.
At least 17 people were critically injured, police said. At least eight children were being treated at hospitals. In addition to losing limbs, victims suffered broken bones, shrapnel wounds and ruptured eardrums.
Dr. Stephen Epstein of the emergency medicine department at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center said he saw an X-ray of one victim's leg that had "what appears to be small, uniform, round objects throughout it - similar in the appearance to BBs."
Eight-year-old Martin Richard was among the dead, said Rep. Stephen Lynch, a family friend. The boy's mother, Denise, and 6-year-old sister, Jane, were badly injured. His brother and father were also watching the race but were not hurt.
A candle burned on the stoop of the family's single-family home in the city's Dorchester section Tuesday, and the word "Peace" was written in chalk on the front walk.
Neighbor Betty Delorey said Martin loved to climb neighborhood trees and hop the fence outside his home.
Also killed was Krystle Campbell, a 29-year-old restaurant manager from Medford, Mass., who had gone with her best friend to take a picture of the friend's boyfriend crossing the finish line.
William Campbell said his daughter was "very caring, very loving person, and was Daddy's little girl."
About 23,000 runners participated in this year's Boston Marathon. Nearly two-thirds of them had crossed the finish line by the time the bombs exploded, but thousands more were still completing the course, and the area around the finish line was crowded with athletes and friends and relatives cheering them on.
Davis, the police commissioner, said that two security sweeps of the route had been conducted before the blasts.
Patriots' Day commemorates the opening shots of the American Revolution, at Concord and Lexington in 1775.
Richard Barrett, the former U.N. coordinator for an al-Qaida and Taliban monitoring team who has also worked for British intelligence, said the relatively small size of the devices in Boston and the timing of the blasts suggest a domestic attack rather than an al-Qaida-inspired one.
"This happened on Patriots' Day - it is also the day Americans are supposed to have their taxes in - and Boston is quite a symbolic city," said Barrett, now senior director at the Qatar International Academy for Security Studies.

U.S. confronts grimly familiar questions after Boston Marathon attack

The United States grappled Tuesday with the aftermath of another terrorist attack on domestic soil, traumatized once again — 12 years after Sept. 11, 2001 — by images of bloody mayhem and grisly injuries resulting from two bombings, this time at the famed Boston Marathon.
“This was a heinous and cowardly act,” U.S. President Barack Obama said at a White House news conference.
“Any time bombs are used to target innocent civilians, it is an act of terror. What we don’t yet know, however, is who carried out this attack.”
Three people were killed and more than 170 injured at the finish line of the marathon, some with devastating injuries, after two bombs were detonated about 10 seconds and 90 metres apart. Many of the race’s 23,000 participants had already crossed the finish line, but thousands more were still approaching the end.
Among those killed was an eight-year-old boy who was watching the race with his family. Young Martin Richard’s mother and six-year-old sister were gravely injured.
The explosives were put in six-litre pressure cookers packed with ball bearings and scraps of metal to inflict maximum carnage. They were placed in black duffel bags and left on the ground, The Associated Press reported, citing law enforcement sources.
They were crudely designed devices that had a devastating impact — several of the wounded had their limbs blown off in the blasts, including at least one marathon runner who lost both legs as he neared the finish line of the storied race.
Federal investigators were searching for those responsible as Americans were once again left reeling from scenes of blood-soaked chaos and fearful for their own safety.
But the FBI assured Americans that there were no known additional threats. Boston officials, meantime, said they’d conducted two security sweeps of the route before the race.
The bombings occurred on what’s known as Patriots Day in Massachusetts.
Law enforcement authorities, including bomb experts, searched an apartment in Revere, Mass., a Boston bedroom community northeast of the city, and removed some items from the home on Monday night. They said little publicly, however, about how the search was linked to the bombings except to acknowledge it involved a “person of interest.”
Investigators were poring over surveillance camera images from a large number of videos obtained from businesses in the downtown area where the explosions occurred, said Edward Davis, Boston police commissioner. The FBI was also expected to issue subpoenas for records from cell towers in the area.
“This is probably one of the most photographed areas in the country yesterday,” Davis said.
The FBI’s Boston division urged people to send along any information, photographs, videos or other details from the bombings.
“No piece of information or detail is too small,” it said in a statement. Another FBI official vowed investigators would go to the “ends of the Earth” to apprehend whoever is responsible, adding agents are following a number of leads.
Obama said investigators don’t know yet whether the bombings were perpetrated by an international organization, a domestic group or a “malevolent individual.” But he made clear: “The American people refuse to be terrorized.”
From coast to coast, officials were on high alert, tightening security at airports, government buildings, sporting events and landmarks where citizens gather in large numbers.
Intelligence officials said publicly they suspected the attacks were the work of a domestic terrorist rather than al Qaida.
“This happened on Patriots Day — it is also the day Americans are supposed to have their taxes in — and Boston is quite a symbolic city,” said Richard Barrett, the former UN co-ordinator for an al-Qaida and Taliban monitoring team who has also worked for British intelligence.
Taliban in Pakistan, which claimed responsibility for the 2010 attempt in Times Square, has denied any role in the Boston Marathon attack.

A pressure cooker stuffed with gunpowder and shrapnel caused at least one of the blasts at the Boston Marathon that killed three people and injured 176 others in the worst attack on U.S. soil since Sept. 11, 2001, law enforcement sources said on Tuesday.
President Barack Obama called the two bombings on the marathon finish line an "act of terror" and police said parts of the center of Boston could be closed for days as they investigated the blasts that caused several people to lose limbs.
"When these kids came in ... they were just so badly hurt, just covered with singed hair and in so much pain, it was just gut-wrenching," said David Mooney, the director of the trauma program at Boston Children's Hospital. "Pulling nails out of a little girl's flesh is just awful."
At least 10 people had limbs amputated as a result of their injuries, officials at hospitals said.

The youngest to die in the attacks was an 8-year-old boy. His family identified him in a statement as Martin Richard, who lived in the city's Dorchester neighborhood.. Outside the family's home, sympathizers created a makeshift memorial of flowers and "Peace" was written in chalk on the sidewalk.
Officials identified a second person killed as Krystle Campbell, 29, of Medford, Massachusetts. The third person killed in the attack has not yet been identified.
An early lead in the investigation and an apartment search ended with law enforcement sources saying that a Saudi Arabian student injured in the blast was likely to be cleared of suspicion. No one has been arrested, Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis told reportes on Tuesday morning.
Later on Tuesday in Washington, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said there was no indication that the bomb blasts were part of a broader plot.
PRESSURE COOKER BOMB
At least one bomb, and possibly both, were built using pressure cookers as the superstructure, black powder or gunpowder as the explosive and ball bearings as additional shrapnel, according to current and former counter-terrorism officials briefed on the matter.
The sources, who asked not to be identified, said instructions on how to design such bombs are available on the Internet.
"Any time bombs are used to target innocent civilians, it is an act of terror," Obama said in the White House briefing room. "What we don't yet know, however, is who carried out this attack or why, whether it was planned and executed by a terrorist organization - foreign or domestic - or was the act of a malevolent individual."
Dispelling earlier reports of as many as seven devices being found around Boston, Gene Marquez, assistant special agent in charge for the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said authorities had determined that the only bombs deployed in the attack were the two that detonated shortly before 3 p.m. EDT on Monday.
Any unexploded device might have provided a clearer picture of what materials were used and how the bomb was assembled, furnishing leads in the case.
Officials in cities across the United States were watchful and several had security scares on Tuesday, although no injuries were reported.
At Boston Logan International Airport, two passengers and their bags were removed from a United Airlines flight before departure on Tuesday morning, a source with direct knowledge of the action said.
In New York, the central terminal of La Guardia International Airport was briefly evacuated after authorities discovered a suspicious package at around 10:30 a.m. EDT in the terminal, authorities said.
A nearly mile-long stretch of Boylston Street, near the marathon finish and Boston's two tallest buildings remained cordoned off on Tuesday and portions of that street could remain closed for several days, police said.
Davis, the police commissioner, called it "the most complex crime scene that we have dealt with in the history of our department."
LOWER-BODY INJURIES
Trauma surgeons at several Boston hospitals said at press briefings that a number of victims had a range of metallic shrapnel material removed during surgery, including pellets and what appeared to be carpenter nails.
"The vast majority of the injuries were to lower extremities," said Dr. Tracey Dechert, a trauma surgeon at Boston Medical Center, which treated 23 people and performed amputations on five of them.
The inclusion of material such as nails in the device would be reminiscent of the 1996 bombing at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, which killed two people and injured about 150 others. Anti-abortion activist Eric Rudolph, who eluded capture for years, pleaded guilty to the attack and is currently serving consecutive life sentences.
Officials in Britain and Spain said the London and Madrid marathons would go ahead on Sunday, but security plans for both races were under review.
Runners who had traveled to Boston for the annual marathon, which has been held since 1897 and attracts an estimated half-million spectators and some 20,000 participants, remained in shock on Tuesday morning.
Pat Monroe-DuPrey, of Winter Haven, Florida, ran with his wife, Laura, in a trip to mark their 10th anniversary after being married during the race.
He said he did not know what to make of the blast, which came as he was finishing the race in a state of exhaustion.
"You don't have a brain at 26 miles," Monroe-DuPrey said. "They got us off the course, and then I was panicking."

A startling report from Paul Joseph Watson has revealed that officials may have had prior knowledge of an impending terror attack.
An eyewitness to the two explosions at the Boston Marathon today said that a “drill” was repeatedly announced before the bombs exploded and that he “thought it was odd” bomb sniffing dogs were in place before the blast.
University of Mobile’s Cross Country Coach Ali Stevenson told Local 15 News, ““They kept making announcements on the loud speaker that it was just a drill and there was nothing to worry about. “It seemed like there was some sort of threat, but they kept telling us it was just a drill.”
The news station also reports that Stevenson “thought it was odd there were bomb sniffing dogs at the start and finish lines.”
Stevenson then describes hearing the explosions as he ran away from the scene, having just completed the marathon.
If this report is accurate, it clearly suggests there could have been some degree of prior knowledge of the bombing, which killed two people and injured at least 23.

Multiple explosions have rocked the Boston Marathon, causing at least two deaths and tearing apart numerous limbs.
A third explosion is now being reported at JFK Library with officials searching the city for any other previously placed bombs.
Two bombs exploded near the finish of the Boston Marathon on Monday, killing two people, injuring 22 others and sending authorities rushing to aid wounded spectators at America’s oldest and most prestigous marathon, race organizers and police said.
One runner, a Rhode Island state police officer, said he saw at least two dozen people with very serious injuries, including missing limbs.
About two hours after the winners crossed the finish line, there was a loud explosion on the north side of Boylston Street, just before the photo bridge that marks the line. Another explosion could be heard a few seconds later.
During a news conference featuring Boston officials, it was confirmed that a third explosion had hit but that information was still trickling in that could confirm that.
The last mile of the marathon was dedicated to the victims of the Newtown shooting. Family members were at the race near the finish line but no injuries to those families have been reported.
Fox News has also confirmed that there are reports that a suspect whom suffered shrapnel wounds is being guarded at a local Boston hospital.

While some of the people in the video appear to be individuals getting thermal blankets possibly for injured spectators, there are definitely indications that others appear to be looting the jackets meant for those who actually completed the race. From the article linked above by Dylan Stableford:

It’s unclear if those seen picking up the jackets, meant for finishers of the race, were aware of what had transpired minutes earlier.
It is clear, however, that some people took more than one.
This is not just sad, but disgusting and unfortunately totally expected considering the horrid state of morality in our society today. There is hardly anyone paying attention to the infanticide case in Philadelphia where an abortion doctor tortured and killed newborn infants so to say Americans, citizens of the wealthiest nation in modern history, would stoop to this level is now typical.

That’s right. Dirty Harry Reid is preparing to rush this vote to exploit the Boston terrorist act to shove gun control restrictions down our throat and pressure the House of Representatives to follow suit as if this has anything to do with a bomb exploding in a public place.

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews wasted no time in questioning whether today’s horrific bombing of the Boston Marathon was a politically-motivated attack.
On “Hardball” tonight, the host openly questioned whether at least a portion of the horror was an intentional attack against the Democratic Party. Matthews made his controversial comments when he assumed that a purported explosion at the JFK Library was associated with the bombings.
“I was just thinking, again, it’s early; it’s an early situation, but going after the Kennedy Library, not something at Bunker Hill, not something from the freedom trail or anything that kind of historic, but a modern political figure of the Democratic Party,” he said “Does that tell you anything?”
These comments were uttered during an exchange with Michael Leiter, former director of the United States National Counterterrorism Center. Matthews preceded his questioning of whether the Democrats were under siege with the following statement:“Let me ask you about domestic terrorism as a category.
Normally, domestic terrorists, people tend to be on the far right, well that’s not a good category, just extremists, let’s call them that. Do they advertise after they do something like this? Do they try to get credit as a group or do they just hate America so much or its politics or its government that they just want to do the damage, they don’t care if they get public credit, if you will?

Source: Look for trail through Sri Lanka, Bangladesh
Although it is not known yet who is responsible for Monday’s heinous bombings at the Boston Marathon that killed three and injured more than 100 people, a source within Iranian intelligence services told WND the Islamic regime was behind them and to look for trails through Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
The source said the bombs were planted near the end of the race so that the horrific images of the blasts would be captured by all the media there and be replayed over and over throughout the world.
A senior commander of the Islamic regime had warned less than two months ago that terrorism was coming to America.
“If the people of America and Europe do not confront the aggressive policies of their governments, they cannot then remain far from the possible future events (terror attacks),” the regime’s armed forces deputy chief of staff, Brig. Gen. Masoud Jazayeri, said in a Feb. 23 interview with Fars News Agency, a media outlet run by the Revolutionary Guards. “Al-Qaida groups and other services which operate for the interests of America (in Syria) will soon change the region of their operations and thereafter create new problems for America and Europe.”
Jazayeri, objecting to U.S. involvement in the Syrian civil war, warned that explosions similar to those in Syria would take place in other countries.
With information from a source in the supreme leader’s office, WND reported exclusively on Dec. 11, 2012, that a team of Quds Force terrorist leaders had infiltrated the United States to attack from within in 2013. The source said the team is to create instability in America through terrorism should the U.S. fail to accept the regime’s illicit nuclear program or increase sanctions, confront Iran militarily or intervene in the Syrian civil war.
In a WND exclusive report on Feb. 28, the source said that a six-member team, including an explosives specialist, was to join 10 Quds Force commanders who already have a cell of 50 terrorists in the U.S. The source added that Iran is working with al-Qaida factions because al-Qaida attacks would not leave behind a link to Tehran.
The source for today’s information blamed the Islamic regime for the Boston attack and pointed to the collaboration of the regime’s Quds Forces with Hezbollah and elements of al-Qaida with links to individuals in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. He said that under Quds Force guidance, Hezbollah recruited Sunni terrorists allied with al-Qaida factions in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, who then entered the U.S. for terrorist activities.
The information has been shared with U.S. officials.
But until the FBI and other U.S. agencies complete their investigations, all information regarding the bombings must be considered with great caution and any conclusions would be premature.
If the source is correct, however, then three individuals will likely have had a hand in planning and preparing for the attack:
Mustafa Badr Al Din, the brother-in-law and cousin of the dead terrorist Imad Mugniyah, who now serves as Mugnyiah’s replacement as the military leader of Hezbollah and who also serves as the deputy of Qasem Soliemani, the head of the Islamic regime’s Quds Forces.
Mohammad Ali Hamadei, on the FBI’s most-wanted list, a Hezbollah operator responsible for operation and infiltration of forces into America who was based in New Mexico with a Latin American passport and who was also seen last year in England.
Talal Hamieh, the head of Hezbollah’s External Security Organization responsible for operations outside of Lebanon. He has been in Mexico collaborating with drug cartels to raise funds for Hezbollah cells and facilitates the transfer of arms and terrorists into the U.S.
Both Badr Al Din and Hamieh were designated for sanctions by the U.S. Treasury Department last year for their involvement in terrorist activities throughout the world.
In the aftermath of the Boston bombings, Fars News Agency put out a piece headlined, “Obama in deep trouble if Boston bombing was by Salafis (ultraconservative Sunni Muslims).”
Fars said one reason that Obama has not linked the Boston bombing to al-Qaida is that his administration wants to show it has defeated al-Qaida and any mention of the terrorist group would undermine his position.
It ominously mentioned that America is now allied with the Salafis and al-Qaida in confronting Syria’s Bashar Assad and that if it’s proven that the same elements were responsible for the bombings in Boston, then Obama would be severely criticized by the American public.
Fars, as with the earlier warning by Jazayeri, denounced Obama’s decision to help the opposition in Syria and hinted that the Boston attack is related to al-Qaida and the hardcore Sunnis. It concluded that Obama would likely not name them as the guilty party to save face.
Although the Islamic regime has long warned that America will not be safe from its reach and that it must not only accept Iran’s nuclear program but also end its support for the opposition in Syria, there is no proven link yet between Boston and Tehran.

Ordinarily I'd be one to suggest these various things happening are independent and it is due to our e-society that we have this all culminating so quickly. That said, I am not so sure here. We do not normally see more than a couple incidents in a day and mostly these are local issues of violence. Here in two days we have:
Boston Marathon
Thrift store in GA (may be independent)
Ricin letter to the Capitol
PG&E site in the CA bay area damaged badly.
There are more surely, but above we have casualty attack and a infrastructure target as well as a leadership target.

The Saudi national injured during the bomb attacks at the Boston Marathon Monday has been cleared and is no longer even a person of interest, intelligence officials told lawmakers Tuesday.
Director of National Intelligence James Clapper briefed members of the Senate Intelligence Committee behind closed doors in a pre-scheduled hearing that was supposed to focus on the budget, but Clapper began with an update of the bombings. Ranking Republican Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) emerged from the briefing and said he was told the 22-year old Saudi student who was injured during the bombings and remains in the care of a local hospital was no longer a focus of investigators.
"He was never categorized as a suspect; he was a person of interest. My understanding is that he totally cooperated and that he is no longer a person of interest," Chambliss said.
Asked if there were any other persons of interest at this time, Chambliss said, "Not that I know of."
Details about the bombings are still scarce and the investigation hasn't yielded any firm conclusions about the perpetrator or the origin of the explosive devices yet, according to Chambliss.
"It's a very fluid investigation, the FBI is in the lead, and I personally know the special agent in charge. He is one of the best, and they are doing a very good job of moving the investigation forward," he said. "We don't know at this point whether it was a home grown terrorist, whether it was an isolated incident or part of an overall scheme, whether it was a domestic terrorist or a foreign terrorist."
Chambliss did say that security around the country would have to change for large public events, including greater involvement by the federal government.
"This was a soft target. It was not a target that was able to be totally protected," he said. "This particular incident is going to cause the administration and Congress to evaluate our overall security programs around the country, particularly for major events. We can't leave it just to the communities that host these events to provide the security."
BOSTON (WHDH) -- Photos sent to 7News by a viewer show the scene just before and right after the bombs went off on Boylston Street.
7News has provided these pictures to the FBI as they continue their investigation. They are looking at the pictures to see if it's possible it could be the second bomb.
In the first picture you can see a bag next to a mailbox and up against a barricade along the marathon route. In the second, which we have blurred because it is very graphic, there is no sign of the bag. The viewer who took the pictures says there may be an hour or more between when the first and second pictures were taken.
