Russia will create three new military divisions on its Western flank in 2016 and bring five new strategic nuclear missile regiments into service, Sergei Shoigu, the country's defense minister, was quoted as saying by news agencies on Tuesday.

Shoigu's announcement was consistent with a multi-billion dollar overhaul of Russia's military, which is currently carrying out air strikes in Syria after helping annexe Ukraine's Crimea region in 2014.

Shoigu did not explain the motivation for forming the new divisions, but said it would be one of the most important tasks for the defense ministry this year. He said every military district should also expect to undergo spot checks in 2016.

"Our main effort should go into strengthening the potential of our strategic nuclear forces and of fulfilling the space defense program," the RIA Novosti agency quoted Shoigu as telling a meeting.

"Five rocket regiments, equipped with modern rocket complexes, will enter active service in 2016."

It was also necessary to steadily improve the infrastructure supporting the nuclear forces, he said, singling out the facilities where the country's nuclear-armed submarines and long-range nuclear bombers were based.

New Divisions Being Deployed In Western Parts Of Russia In 2016

Sergey Shoigu, Russia’s Defence Minister, said on January 12 that the government would deploy three new divisions in the western parts of the country in 2016. According to analysts, the decision is in response to NATO intensifying its activities near Russia’s western borders.

      January 15, 2016

The tank divisions will have the latest military vehicles – the T-72B3 and T-90 tanks.

Russian Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu said the defence department plans to create three new divisions in the Western areas of the country. He made the statement during his first teleconference meeting of 2016. The armed forces must not only create these military units, but also prepare places for their future deployment, Shoigu said, particularly designing additional polygons, places for the storage of equipment and placement of personnel.

Over the past two years, NATO leaders have moved heavy military equipment; tanks, self-propelled artillery installations and armoured personnel carriers; into Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. NATO bloc armed forces regularly conduct military exercises near the Russian borders, and the United States has established a missile defence complex in Romania.

To deal with the increased NATO activities near Russian borders, Moscow has decided to strengthen its borders and move some of its latest military equipment to its western regions.

Changes in military strategy of Russia

The latest Russian National Defence Strategy considers NATO’s “continuous buildup of power potential” close to its borders as a direct threat to the security of the Russian Federation.

“Russia needs to increase the size of its armed forces. The easiest option is to start turning brigades into divisions,” said Alexander Khramchikhin, deputy director of the Institute of Political and Military Analysis. He believes NATO leaders will continue to react to Moscow’s actions using the same methods that were demonstrated over the last two years.

NATO armed forces conducted the military bloc’s largest ever exercises in Poland and the Baltic States in June 2015. 11,000 troops, 40 aircraft (including B-52 bombers), and more than 500 pieces of military equipment (including the Leopard 2A5 and the M1 Abrams tanks) participated in NATO’s ‘Saber Strike’ manoeuvres.

“The Alliance is bringing its military units closer to Russia’s borders and placing heavy armour into Lithuania and Latvia. The Polish leadership is now clamouring for additional military units and bases of the Alliance on its territory, to protect Poland against some kind of ‘Russian threat’,” RIR learned from retired Colonel Viktor Litovkin, military observer of TASS. He believes that Moscow should be prepared to protect its borders and modernize existing Western Military District brigades into divisions (divisions in peacetime: up to 13,000 people each).

“The tank divisions will have the latest military vehicles – the T-72B3 and T-90 tanks. The mechanized infantry will get the BMP-3 and BMP-4 machines, self-propelled guns of the Koalitsiya (Coalition) type. In the future, obsolete tanks will be replaced by machines of the Armata type. The divisions will also be provided with helicopters for fire support,” he said.

China Tests Missile With 10 Warheads
January 31, 2017 By Bill Gertz China flight tested a new variant of a long-range missile with 10 warheads in what defense officials say represents a dramatic shift in Beijing's strategic nuclear posture. The flight test of the DF-5C missile was carried out earlier this month using 10 multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles, or MIRVs. The test of the inert warheads was monitored closely by U.S. intelligence agencies, said two officials familiar with reports of the missile test. The missile was fired from the Taiyuan Space Launch Center in central China and flew to an impact range in the western Chinese desert. No other details about the test could be learned. Pentagon spokesman Cmdr. Gary Ross suggested in a statement the test was monitored. "The [Defense Department] routinely monitors Chinese military developments and accounts for PLA capabilities in our defense plans," Ross told the Washington Free Beacon. The test of a missile with 10 warheads is significant because it indicates the secretive Chinese militar

Russia Unveils RS-28 Sarmat 'Satan 2' Nuclear Missile
October 26, 2016 Russia has declassified the first image of its new thermonuclear-armed intercontinental ballistic missile. The RS-28 Sarmat could carry a payload capable of wiping out a landmass "the size of Texas or France," according to a report by the Kremlin-aligned Sputnik news agency. Known colloquially as "Satan 2," the missile will replace the RS-36M — which was dubbed "Satan" by NATO after entering service in the 1970s. Robert Kelley, a former nuclear weapons expert at the U.S. Department of Energy, said the new missile was likely an upgrade

Details of island building in S. China Sea disclosed

China’s military underwent a major restructuring last year in a bid to prepare its military for conflict, the Pentagon said in its latest annual assessment of the Communist Party-controlled People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

The armed forces were reformed with new military regions, a new command structure, and updated strategies to better fight regional, high technology warfare, the 145-page report to Congress says. “These reforms aim to strengthen the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) control over the military, enhance the PLA’s ability to conduct joint operations, and improve its ability to fight short-duration, high-intensity regional conflicts at greater distances from the Chinese mainland,” the report said. Abraham Denmark, deputy assistant defense secretary for East Asia, told reporters the military reforms “are intended to enhance the PLA’s ability to conduct joint operations by replacing the old military regions wi

New multiple-warhead missiles to break arms treaty limit

    April 1, 2016
    By Bill Gertz

Russia is doubling the number of its strategic nuclear warheads on new missiles by deploying multiple reentry vehicles that have put Moscow over the limit set by the New START arms treaty, according to Pentagon officials.

A recent intelligence assessment of the Russian strategic warhead buildup shows that the increase is the result of the addition of multiple, independently targetable reentry vehicles, or MIRVs, on recently deployed road-mobile SS-27 and submarine-launched SS-N-32 missiles, said officials familiar with reports of the buildup.

“The Russians are doubling their warhead output,” said one official. “They will be exceeding the New START [arms treaty] levels because of MIRVing these new systems.”

The 2010 treaty requires the United States and Russia to reduce deployed warheads to 1,550 warheads by February 2018.

The United States has cut its warhead stockpiles significantly

Russia Could Overrun The Baltic States In THREE DAYS: US War Planners Say NATO Has Been Caught Napping And Would Be Hopelessly Outgunned

    February 3, 2016

Russia could overrun Eastern Europe in just three days because NATO has not been bolstering its fleet since Vladimir Putin took Crimea, according to US military predictions.

Testing every possible scenario in a series of war games, a US military think tank has concluded it would take a resurgent Russia between 36 and 60 hours to push its 27 heavily-armored battalions past NATO's lightweight 12 to occupy the Baltic States.

Most likely, the study found, Russia would start by launching a two-pronged attack across the Latvian border, sending heavily-armed battalions in from the north and the south. These battalions would push past the light-weight Latvian and NATO battalions before unit
